  • AJA HDP versus Blackmagic HDLink?

Posted by Kevin Wild on December 5, 2005 at 8:14 pm

Any one have opinions on which does a better job for monitoring HD content? I’ll be using it in a Mac, Kona LHe setup with output to a Dell2405 24″ LCD monitor.

I like the idea that I can choose the HDP to scale up the 720p footage, if desired, to fit the screen. However, if I want it pixel for pixel, can I change it to do that?

Any advantages of one over the other?

    Thanks!

I have seen them both side by side and the Blackmagic HDLink definitely has better blacks. That said when it comes to scaling SD up to fill the monitor then the AJA seems to do a better job. The HDLink has a USB connection which allows for firmware updates and allows you to calibrate your monitor as well as an interlace simulator. I personally would choose the HDLink.

I thought the HDLink won’t scale up. Is this true?

    Thx.

    Hi-

The HDP does have pixel for pixel display support, which can be switched on or off via a simple dipswitch. As you mentioned, it also has a great scaler to scale SD or 720 video up to the native res of your monitor. The HDO auto-senses what it is being fed, and either diosplays it natively, or scales up based on the switch selection.

And, as with any of our conversion products, it includes our incredible 5-year warranty, that includes our fantastic tech support and advanced exchange! Plus, we offer a 30-day return policy if you are unhappy for any reason!

    Thank you,

    We have had both.

The HD-Link up scale SD to HD was poor (actually bad), this may have changed with new firmare but at the time we could not use them with any SD source.

The first generation HDPs had a defective component that caused sparkles in the HD video, all three have been swapped out under warrenty and have been clean and rock solid reliable.

P.S. Black levels on the HDS have been fine.
