220Mbps = Mbit/sec is approx 28MByte/s , which can be transfered by most firewire800 drives. The firewire 800 ( which is 800Mbit/sec ) gives up to 70-75MB/s speeds. So you could use the fw800 to play your prores444.
only problem is that the current pciexpress sdi interfaces are 4.2.2 yuv, so the computer needs to recalculated in realtime to another colorspace. Should be tested if this still can be done realtime while keeping the quality and realtime.
you can calculate easily the codec datarates with the new version of the free aja datarate calculator https://www.aja.com/products/software/
The Alexa datarates ProRes444 will be between 30-40MByte/sec

try the behringer ultramatch 2496 convertor and a small mixer ( minimon800 ) for level control.
also check out the new behringer MS20 and MS40 active speakers: they have besides analog input also sp/dif digital inputs.
another solution are the edifier S2.1d version active speakers : https://www.edifier.ca/products/s2141/s21d.html . They sound very good for their price and there is a remote control, but they dont have headphone outputs and even though they also have analog inputs, these dont work together with the digital input.

if cost is an issue, try Photoshop elements, does most of the needed things for video, has also the browser and is not expensive.
otherwise try Xee or iView — see http://www.versiontracker.com

  • you could connect you macbookpro to your xsr over gigaspeed ethernet.
limit will be approx 90Mb/s. would be enough to test the renderspeeds

we NEVER let our video mac’s sleep, not the machine, not the disks.
only the screens can sleep after 1 hr.
also disabled are the visual screensavers : if the kick in during capture or layback to tape you could have dropped frames
the mac’s can be on all time, this gives no problems.

some of my customers had problems with hd formats after updating to 10.4.4. ( i recommend for the moment staying on 10.4.3 – dont fix what aint broke… )
Solution was with diskutility : repair permissions and reinstalling the decklinkdrivers.
