There is another ol’ school solution – marks on focus ring. If you use primes on stationary camera you can easily put two marks and do focus racking. It’s a little bit tricky with Canon glass though. Otherwise, use external monitor.

Do not select Card or STREAM folder. Instead select the BDMV folder for it’s root folder from CF.

First of all forget about editing .h264 in FCP. Secondly, ain’t FCP 5 too antique for this kind of job? I don’t even remember what codec I’d used back then. Anyways convert your dslr footage into editable format i.e ProRes.

Since Mark III Canon 5D records in bt.709 color space. Mark II uses bt.601. You can change it to 709 while transcoding at your peril – from my own experience I can testify that consequences are dramatic color shift – in cases of mixed sources of light 5DtoRGB, for instance, rendered it almost unusable.

There can be no wrong or right answer as to what preset to use “generally”. It’s all in the realm of your preferences and artistic choices.

All this information you can retrieve from .THM files that accompany your .mov files. Use EXIF Viewer to open them. It’s free application.

I suggest latest version 5DtoRGB. Don’t forget to use rec.709 matrix to transcode files from Canon 5D Mark III. MPEG Streamclip would be my last choice which I’d resort to if everything else failed.

  • Ingest footage thru L&T utility (watch out for reel and clip names), relink media on your timeline to Prores files, change sequence settings to prores compressor. Check the edits for minor alterations. Now you’re ready to export.

May 12, 2012 at 6:26 pm in reply to: monitor questuin for DSLR rig

    Steve,
nobody’s here arguing that an external control monitor is helpful and should be handy. The question I raised was about the reason behind buying a pro level monitor such as Marshal while the signal you get from 5D’s still gonna be compromised from the outset? Why pay $1200 for something that you can get much cheaper?
I thought about purchasing Marshal but opted for cheaper Liliput. I believe for 5D 1K priced Marshal is overkill.

It depends on what you’re looking for in your monitor. Since there is no way at present to get clean HDMI out 5D I see no purpose in buying a top-shelf pro video monitor. If you need to look pro for your clients Marshal name will ring some bells no doubts.
