May 12, 2012 at 12:17 pmIt depends on what you’re looking for in your monitor. Since there is no way at present to get clean HDMI out 5D I see no purpose in buying a top-shelf pro video monitor. If you need to look pro for your clients Marshal name will ring some bells no doubts.

May 12, 2012 at 3:55 pmWait a minute guys there can be lots of reasons you might want an external monitor that have nothing to do with HDMI
1. To better postion the viewfinder so that it aligns more naturally with your eye while on a shoulder rig
2. For features like peaking and Zebra striping
3. So that others, like a focus puller, can see better what’s going on image wise
And it occurs to me if the camera did provide a “clean” HDMI signal to the external monitor then you would not be able to see all that helpful info like shutter speed, ISO, aperture, etc –
Just my 2 cents!

May 12, 2012 at 6:26 pmSteve,
nobody’s here arguing that an external control monitor is helpful and should be handy. The question I raised was about the reason behind buying a pro level monitor such as Marshal while the signal you get from 5D’s still gonna be compromised from the outset? Why pay $1200 for something that you can get much cheaper?
I thought about purchasing Marshal but opted for cheaper Liliput. I believe for 5D 1K priced Marshal is overkill.Production and Postproduction in Moscow

May 12, 2012 at 6:29 pmYeah I guess I did misunderstand a bit on that one, sorry!
I once learned that the definition of value is price divided by or relative to performance/quality
I probably wouldn’t buy a Marshall either – would love to HAVE one but just couldn’t afford it

May 12, 2012 at 8:32 pmJust to confuse the issue, these guys in China receive great ratings, ship fast, and I’ve had no problems with the DSLR rig components I’ve purchased from them:
They have a pretty wide array of monitors, ranging from the downright cheap to pretty affordable, from 5 inch to honking 10 inch leviathans. The specs are all there, so it’s pretty easy to compare the various models with the (much more) expensive Marshalls that you’re considering. Good luck!

May 13, 2012 at 8:49 pmI picked up a really cheap 7″ in-car DVD LCD for about $60 and an inexpensive HDMI to RCA converter for $30 for my t2i. My goal was just to position the camera for a job I had made. Since I knew the signal wasn’t clean from the camera and I just needed positioning, it made perfect sense not to spend a lot. I shoot with one of a few “flat” cine settings most of the time and I plan to correct colors later in fcp so just getting positioning and framing is important. I can’t control focus real well when using the jib either so there are loads of reasons not to spend a lot.
If you feel your use of a monitor is crucial to your workflow, then get what you can afford. The nice thing is that your $1200 monitor will be useful for a long time whereas my quick fix probably won’t.
