You need one copy of Lion per computer (Volume licensing is different story), therefor you can install as many OSs on different partitions as you wish.

Nope, there’s not gonna be a latitude (if you use this term to describe the range of exposures for which an emulsion or printing paper will give acceptable contrast). The only edge you’ll get is kind of smoother handling of media inside editing/CC application due to artificially increased volume of data available for every pixel. As a practical result you’ll have fewer compression artifacts, color banding, polarization to name but few as you apply drastic visual postproduction changes. Anyways, in my opinion this artificial boosting is well worthy in post. Although you kind of end up with phony data for every pixel it is still better off than having lousy true 8-bit 420 footage as is.

The short answer is YES. Although the devil is in detail: If there is no data in the first place you can’t get it through conversion or transcoding. What this app is doing is giving you more editable media file to work with. Unfortunately, it’s unable to fill in the gapes of 420 encoding scheme.

I’m not sure what happened to your files. If you still able to access your files as you described you can try to transfer them by connecting a USB to camera. Try Canon software utilities that go along with the camera to transfer files. You’d lose meta files yet it’s better than nothing.

2:35 is industry standard, though if you do not plan on transferring onto film and using movie projector theoretically you can use whatever AR you you’re comfortable with.
Yes you’re going to lose resolution due to crop.
You can use gridlines which are kind of representative of AR to some degree or you can use gaffer’s tape to block parts of camera display to the same effect. Finally there are firmware solutions from Magic Lantern that allow you to set AR guidelines arbitrary.
As to editing in Premiere I’m afraid I have nothing to say.

  • I’d rather steer clear of Nahalem and focus my search on Westmere – this is where the raw power at the moment resides. I believe you can find some year old second-hand tower at affordable price. And look only for dual cpu architecture. Anyways it’s your wallet and it’s up to you to decide what price is affordable and reasonable.
BTW, I too have MacPro 1,1 and many argue that it’s the best Intel mac made by Apple ever since they shied away from PPCs. Everything that came after was 101 marketing. I still hold down to mine dearly.

  • If money is not issue, and I believe that’s your case, it’s good idea to buy second-hand tower to speed up your renders.

  • For the starters, If you intend on using FCP you need beforehand transcode all media from your camera. You can do it either with 5DtoRGB, or Canon plugin, or Compressor, or MPEGStream Clip. Your choice. In either case choose ProRes HQ as your output. Afterwards you’d want to use one of Compressor presets for BR.
On the other hand, you may wish to import your media without transcoding directly onto Premiere timeline and then export it with Encoder. Take a look at presets available in Encoder.
