Figured it out. Animator error. He rendered part of his animation in upper, then combined it together with something in lower and sent me something with mixed dominance.
I thought I was crazy, but it was him! Those guys need to sleep more!

Nope, it’s not a card issue. I pulled my PCI cards still had the same crashing problem. Try it and post your results. It only happened to me on really large/long exports (like 15 minutes). Short exoorts worked fine.

You have too much memory. reduce to 2GB and try it again. I had that problem. I had 5GB and FCP worked fine, but while exporting it would crash. I took out th extra memory and it exported fine. It seems to be a quirk with MacPro right now.

Think ahead. Go faster than Firewire 800. It’ll be well worth doing. You may not want or need to do other formats right now, but you may get a request to do Uncompressed SD or even some basic uncompressed HD. (Full-blown layered Uncompressed HD is really another league and you will have to spend big bucks for a full fiber raid to do it right. I know from personal experience, I’ve wasted money, spend a few extra dollars now.
Look into a 3GB x-fer speed, expandable SATA Raid system. It’s not too expensive. You can get a PCI card (approx $300), A drive enclosure with a couple of removable drives. ($200) And then a pair of drives are about $200 each. This way you can have seperate sets of drives for different projects clients. Total is under $1K and you can then handle DV, HDV, SD all they way to a single stream of Uncompressed HD.

Don’t record live to FCP. You’re asking for trouble!!!
Record to tape for safety. Once in a while FCP will stop while digitizing due to an error. Especailly if you’r doing long digitizes. You’ll lose your digitized material. Go to some tape format of choice and record the seperate audio tracks discretely. Even when I record any live-to-tape program, I always run a back-up tape for safety. Bad tape, Big dropout, Head clog… anything can happen. You could lose it all? And especially live content which can’t be easily redone.

Copy everything exactly as it is onto the new drive(s). Same folders, same names etc. Don’t move files into new folders etc. Then, re-name the HD the same as the original and FCP will think it’s all as it was. I just did this the other day and it worked perfectly.
