Sonnettech Fusion 500P storage
Posted by Sforman on October 17, 2006 at 5:15 pmI need at least 2.5TB of hi-speed storage and am poised to buy the Sonnettech Fusion 500P because it seems to offer basically the same properties as the LaCie biggest and Wiebetech SilverSATA V, but for much less cost. The Sonnettech allows you to buy your own hard drives (planning to get Seagate 500 or 750GB drives) and the Fusion 500P w/ card is only $800 (that

October 17, 2006 at 7:32 pmBeen using one for 3 months now with no problems at all. Only downside is that it’s a JBOD array so if one drive goes pop you’re fried, but that’s why it’s a cheaper option. As far as I know the LaCie doesn’t offer RAID 5 either.
I’ve been editing HD with ease and it even copes with 10 bit Uncompressed HD.

October 18, 2006 at 4:30 pmWe have been using three Sonnet Fusions with Seagate drives for about two months. About a week ago we had what appeared to be two enclosure failures! Long story short, we definitely had one enclosure failure but we are still working to determine what went wrong with the second enclosure.
We didn’t lose any data, but the only way I could get the second system to work was to use two enclosures and put two drives in one and three in the other. We’ve even swapped out the Sonnet Tempo card with no effect.
Sonnet Tech support has been very disappointing to work with from the beginning- only after much hounding of our Sales rep did the tech support begin to be more responsive. They were dismissive and quick to point the finger at Seagate, but could not explain why one system has had no problems and all are using Seagate drives.
I’ve also been working with Seagate tech support. Seagate tech support has been great. They actually called me after receiving my email and sent me a firmware update I will deploy today once the system has finished backing up.
In the end this may be due to a Seagate firmware issue, but in terms of support Seagate wins and Sonnet loses.
Take from this what you will. Perhaps if we had used Hitachi drives (I fully recommend- I didn’t purchase the Seagates) we wouldn’t have had any of these problems, but that still doesn’t change the disappointing Sonnet support.
Best,
Jen

December 27, 2010 at 2:25 pmI have 2 x Fusion 500P, each one containing 5 x 1TB Samsung F1 discs.
they are set up in Raid 0. I use one as an active RAID tower from which I edit current film projects. the second one is the backup device. I use an app called Tri-Backup to sync these two after each editing day.I want to replace the 1TB discs with 2TB discs. 10 new discs in total.
is this a good idea and which ones should I go for? i have been advised not to go for WD or Seagate, but opt for Samsung or Hitachi. just not sure which are reliable 2TB models.
