I want to spend a grand or so on the most cost effective way of backing up P2 footage I shoot on my DVX200 – what is the best value per gig solution out there for under a grand?

    thanks

    Joseph,

Wonderful 500gb drives are available for under $200 and firewire enclosures can be had for $25 to $80 dollars. Thats the cheapest solution, but there are better solutions. Do you want to spend the entire $1000 or would $300 do it for you? Check out http://www.newegg.com and whip out your credit card.

Get internal SATA drives. 250GB for under $100…typically around $65-$90. Then get one firewire case (empty) and swap out the drives, or an adaptor cable like this one to connect it to your drives:

Then when you back up the footage, wrap the drives in their plastic and put them on the shelf. That is what I did.

Don’t know where you live, but out here in Los Angeles, there’s a computer superstore called “Fry’s”. They had 750 gig SATA drives (Seagate) on sale last week for about $300 bucks! That’s approximately $2.50per gig. Don’t know if you can get any cheaper than that.

I lapped up a handful and threw them into our on-line g-5’s for saving backups.

    Try this…

I just installed 3 Maxtor 300GB SATA 3GB drives in my new MacPro. 900GB of 3GB speed SATA for under $300!

If this is to be your backup solution for material you’ve shot and you have no other backup i.e. tape, you should consider a RAID 1 setup. You can buy dual drive enclosures from otherworldcomputing that go up to 750GB in mirrored format (two drives in one enclosure, each with identical data). They sell them in a RAID 1 version, with a copy of SoftRAID which is the best software for doing mirrors (better than OSX). This will give you some security against one drive failing, and SoftRAID will warn you of any errors at any point

    look here:
