If you are not sure you need narration, try to cut your show without it. Use your interviews to tell the story. It’s better to hear the story told with the voice of the people in it anyway. If you end up needing narration it will become obvious later on and you can fill in the empty spaces.

August 3, 2007 at 7:06 pm in reply to: Discovery Shark Week = wierd programming decisions[Tim Wilson] “Battlestar Gallactica, The Closer and Eureka are the only things I watch in SD these days,”
You have to watch Battlestar Gallactica in SD? Ouch! We’ve been very lucky here. We get Universal HD on our cable system. You have to wait a few months after they air it on SciFi but I don’t care. SD isn’t worth my time. I think the only thing we watch in SD is the Daily Show.

[Mike_S] “Question:
If a producer, a director, a lighting cameraman, a camera operator, a focus puller, a sound recordist, a key grip and artists all contribute to a shot, who is its “author” ..?”Add to that an actor and a writer, and you get a really big mess. I think the best advice here is to make sure that it’s all laid out in the contract very specifically.
That being said, what are you going to do with all this footage you own when everything can be uploaded, downloaded, mashed up, and sampled? Legally if you own it you control everything but PRACTICALLY what control do you really have. Billion dollar corporations can’t keep a lid on their own stuff. As a small business person with fewer resources, what can you do if someone “steals” your property? My practical (not legal) advice is to concentrate on your SERVICE and forget about the intellectual property. It’s too much of a hassle with very little return potential.

[Herb Sevush] “an “undo history” feature and get rid of the bug whereby muting a video track destroys all of the sequences renders”
I’m hoping that the new open time line feature will eliminate some of that problem by not requiring renders in the first place. We’ll see…
Hmmm… look at us old timers, actually discussing the new software…

[Les Kaye] “What does sort of surprise me in some of the responses is the “how dare I even ask” reaction.”
I find the “You’re either with us or against us” thrust of many of the posts today to be extremely distasteful. It’s really a disservice to those who couldn’t make it to NAB. It clogs up all the threads with useless “user generated rhetoric.” (Did I just coin a new web 2.0 phrase?)
I too want to know about any meat and potatoes improvements under the hood that may not be highlighted in the press releases. For example: Boy, would I really like to have all my media for a project in one folder instead of spread out all over the place. Apple now has Final Cut Server. Has the development of this product influenced FCP’s media manager? I hope so. Any information about this from those at NAB is very welcome.

[Joe Murray] “So those of you that don’t like the way FCP does this, what about those times when you need to cut out 1 frame?”
But you may end up doing that like what, twice a year? You have to bang back one frame every time you set an out.
[Joe Murray] “Or would you rather have the option to hit i, o and have a 0 frame duration after doing so?”
In that case the in point would be replaced on the timeline with the out point.
[Joe Murray] “Seems like this is one of those things Apple could write into the prefs if they really wanted to.”
I think they should. It’s much simpler and cleaner the other way. You don’t need to do math in your head, the durations all come out correct, and you don’t need to bang back one frame or have extra tab keys on the keyboard as a workaround.
I’ve worked both ways on NLEs and I greatly prefer setting the in and the out the same way, with the cut at the beginning of the frame. It seems like such a simple change. I’m surprised that they haven’t done it already.

The JH-3 deck is great (I have one) but why on earth would you want to edit at a different frame rate and then convert back. That’s just extra work that could end up being a nightmare.

Thanks everyone!
Looks like there’s more than one way to do this. …And I’m glad I don’t have to break out the soldering iron 😉
