The workaround I use is to save all my modified transitions in a dedicated timeline then copy and paste whatever I need from there. It’s clunky but it works.

  • You should definitely check out what Leo Laporte is doing at https://live.twit.tv They’ve been live streaming the twit shows for many years now and probably know more about live internet video than anybody. Just this week they also moved into their magnificent new studio space with multiple sets and lots of technical innovations. In between the recording of the shows the stream continues and you get to see everything that happens behind the scenes.

FCPX isn’t really designed for broadcast. It doesn’t have the features (EDL, OMF, external monitoring etc.) Can you use it? Maybe, depending on your situation but I wouldn’t because editing a broadcast show is a mission critical operation. Your deadlines are usually hard and fast and you don’t want to get hung up on a lot of crazy workarounds especially in the final days just before delivery. I’d say FCPX for broadcast is pretty much out of the question at least until FCPX v2.0.

  • Apple may be a successful company overall but the people in the FCP division still need to defend their decisions within the company. They botched this release big time and made Apple look bad to the general public, even on late night TV.

  • Exactly. They solved a problem that no-one had. I think the magnetic timeline is interesting, it may even be better, but I was doing just fine the “old” way.

These videos remind me of infomercials. “…but you can’t karate chop a tomato. You need the Ginsu!”

They’re desperate. They know they screwed up. Apple should be making videos that lay out a timetable of when they are going to fix the problems instead of just this marketing spin.

The people who watch video online are the same people who watch TV and go to the movies.

[Adam Claude Jones] “Top youtuber? Is that supposed to be something respectful or impressive?”

Yes it is. You may not like his videos and I confess I don’t really like them either… but millions watch them. Personally in my 25 years in broadcast I’ve been responsible for my fair share of crap on TV and elsewhere. The reality is people watch crap and sometimes, despite best efforts, you end up making crap. Charles and many other Youtubers are building a marketplace that you and I may find ourselves in someday. Maybe we’ll be making crap, maybe not. Hopefully we’ll be able to make a lot more money that he does so we can support more than just ourselves working out of our bedroom.

Charles Trippy is a top youtuber with over 183 million views on his show Internet Killed Television.

You can make fun of him but it really just makes you all look sad. Sure, FCPX is DOA for many broadcasters. I’d even go so far as to say that Apple has betrayed, and lost, the professional market. (Maybe “betray” is too strong a word.) And yes, Charles’ overview of FCPX is lame and full of Apple’s patented reality distortion. (Most of the features he says are new are actually in the last version.) But let’s not throw around stereotypes and trash people’s character just because you’re pissed off over what Apple did.

This is a product release. We have to discuss what’s there not what we hope the future will be. We don’t know what’s going to happen with FCPX or how long any updates will take. Companies don’t always do what you think they are going to do. There’s no guarantee that the professional features that have been lost will be put back in. So right now the future better pro FCPX isn’t here yet, FCS3 is EOL, and we’re all in the middle.
