Does anyone have experience using the Sony JH-3 deck? It seems that
it can add pulldown and downconvert 1080p23.98 to DV25 (29.97) for us
on our load-in (over firewire 400), bypassing our need for any Kona 3
card or Black Magic card at all.

    Hi,

The Sony J-H3 deck has an optional Firewire board which will down convert your HDTV 1080p23.98 to compressed DV25 NTSC material. This might well have some uses but DV25 is a low quality compressed codec which defies the point of working in HD in the first place. The DeckLink HD Extreme card will enable you to capture uncompressed video from the HD-SDI output of the Sony J-H3 deck and you can choose either to capture it as uncompressed for maximum quality or else capture to a professional compressed codec such as DVCPRO HD. This will provide you with much better quality and resolution than DV25.

The JH-3 deck is great (I have one) but why on earth would you want to edit at a different frame rate and then convert back. That’s just extra work that could end up being a nightmare.

When we saw that deck at NAB with the firewire on the back we presumed it was going to work like the DVCProHD deck giving us a native 125 MBps HDCam stream!! It was a real disappointment that it only gives DV25. We just did an HDCam job and it really hurts that you have to grab uncompressed, be batched to DVCProHD to edit but the uncompressed files are huge, it’s not a nice workflow at all. HDSDTi is the native stream apparently (although I’m not 100% and can’t find any references online right now), anyone know if sony are going to give us access to that apart from dubs?
