Thanks, Bob.
I have done some pricing comparisons, and to build one as per your suggestion comes to within a couple of hundred dollars of something like this in the same size:
https://www.streetwise.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=28_162&products_id=4602
and this unit has the RAID built in. A wiser option? Built-in RAID surely must offer some advantage… plus I’m in Australia, and I can’t seem to fins a local supplier for the Firmtek stuff… yet…
Do you have an opinion of the Lacie unit? Or Lacie in general – the views her are mixed.

You will also find the “Desaturate” effect in you standard FCP effects, which will do the same thing with one simple drag and drop.

True, but the advantage with doing a reference file is that now you have a sequence that you can work with outside of FCP if you need to send it to STP, or Compressor, or DVDSP…
It suits my workflow, that’s why I do it that way.
Glad I could help.

If you are working at a higher res, it is sometimes advisable to create your graphics outside the hardware codec you’re using… For example, I work on a travel show. We also have Curious maps which we animate. They were coming down from the Graphics dept in the Uncompressed Avid codec (we use Avids at the network), and they were soft on the fine details. When they sent down a QT file with Compressor: None, and we let the Avid covert it into the Avid codec, we got far better results.
Hope this helps.

Never done it exactly that way. I usually export a QT reference file, and in this step there is an option to “Export Markers” for DVDSP or Soundtrack. This embeds them in the file. You can even see them by opening the file up in QT. It then imports into Soundtrack or DVDSP with markers. I have had no probs doing it that way…

My 17″ PB does well for DV editing, but I’m not sure I’d attempt anything that needed too much more guts from your system. I tried to cut a HDV project (natively) in FCP off my FW800 drive… it was painful, I wouldn’t recommend it.
Otherwise, I have used my PB as an offline suite, online (I got desperate!), After Effects and for DVD Studio Pro authoring with a minimum of fuss (with the obvious slowdown issues). Save the cash and buy a bigger monitor / hard drive etc. Especiall if it’s a temporary setup.
My two cents :o)

I recommend you create your comps exactly as you plan to output them – it’s easier to mess it up otherwise.
If you have something like FCP, you can match settings to the presets within that, sometimes a good starting point.

Your best bet is probably an offline/online scenario. You’re not going to be able to work with anything more than DV on your iMac. J30 DigiBeta decka have firewire – maybe you can recapture the rushes in DV, then use the cut you’ve done to point back to the uncompressed stuff. TCs will match fine. Or use FCPs offline resolution?

I think Prem 5.1c will let you export a Quicktime PAL DV file. Transfer via a removable HD or data DVD into FCP.
If you actually want a timeline from Prem… from memory 5.1c will let you export an EDL… does FCE import EDLs?
