Thanks, Jon.
So much for the ‘full trial’ 😛
I will persist in tracking down a colleague with a full version and test with that. Thanks for the reply.

Didn’t realise there were 2 revs of the deck.
It is a very big planet, which is why I’m surprised at the lack of support for 25p in FCP so far.
Anyhow, thanks for your time.

“the 1200 & 1400 decks will not convert from 59.94 to 60hrz if the tape was not shot in that manner, but the decks WILL play 60hrz material if it was shot in-camera over FW. I do it all the time ”
It’s interesting as I remember the documentation for the 1200 deck specifically listing 720p60 as not compatible with firewire. Don’t get me wrong – I don’t doubt you for a moment (I think it’s more likely that our DOP shot 60 rather than 59.94). Just odd.
Do you know of anywhere I can find a whitepaper or something similar on the format? Specifically, I’m intrigued by the difference between 59.94 and 60htz, and the implications – it’s escaping me at the moment.
Also, do you see any holes in my approach?

July 5, 2007 at 9:19 am in reply to: Software Frame Rate Coversion – Varicam offspeed to 25pYeah, the space is an issue. I’m using around 500 gigs on this short for rushes that should only take up 200-odd.
If you have the extra space, you can create self-contained files of your 24fps files and get rid of the 60fps stuff…?
I didn’t shoot the material – you’d have to ask the DOP for a definite answer to that question. Supposedly for PAL it needs to be 60, and for NTSC 59.94. But I will say this – my understanding is that 59.94 and 60 are the same thing (someone’s going to lay into me for that one). If you do some googling, you’ll see there’s some conflicting arguments on that one. BUT… the 1200A deck says it doesn’t support 60 over firwire, only 59.94.
So I’m still a little hazy on that one. I thought I had 60, and it went through fine, so…. ?
Quality difference? You mean as opposed to through SDI? Well, going through SDI is actually a form of recompression, whereas firewire transfer (much like DV) is a lossless transfer.
Monitoring can be achieved via Digital Cinema Desktop or a Kona card.
24fps workflow is a good option, but you’re still gonna have to get to 25fps at some point (unless you’re happy to have it run slow)…

You might be looking for a “Firewire” setting, and on this deck it’s called “iLink”. I Googled it and found this:

I’m doing capture now:
tried 3 mini DV tapes in row, all good , clean new tapes, and similar pattern:
after 15 seconds (on all tapes) FCP says stops the capturing, pauses the tape and says, ” dropped frames were detected on last capture attempt”Is your HD fast enough?
(really weird thing today: my 700GB hardrive said it only have 2GB left, even though the whole drive was free — I deleted the FCP project file at that problems resovled, very bizarre)
Lots of aborted captured from FCP can result in orphan media files in your Capture Scratch, they all take up space and add up. Also, if you had 2GB left on a 700GB drive, and you were trying to digitise, this could very well be the cause of your dropped frames. Hard Disks slow right down after they get 75% to 85% full.
