I’m trying to create a segment of video in After Effects that will be added to a HD 1920 x 1080, anamorphic video using Final Cut. The final video is intended to be viewed online as a QuickTime movie. From what I’ve read in my books, I should really be creating this segment using square pixels and then outputting to the anamorphic format. Can anyone give me the proper procedure for creating something like this? Should I actually create first with square pixels? Do I begin with a 1920 x 1080 comp size or do I create a different comp size and have it stretched during the output phase?

    Thanks,

    Tana

What non-square pixel aspect ratio are you using in FCP? Generally I’d recommend working at the same dimensions that your final output will be. You can set your comps in AE to use a particular PAR.

You can compose at 1920×1080 if you want to, but remember that if you change your PAR on output that you also need to change your width. For example, HDV uses 1440×1080 at 1.33 PAR.

Alternatively, you can just compose and render from AE at 1920×1080 and let FCP handle the conversion.

I recommend you create your comps exactly as you plan to output them – it’s easier to mess it up otherwise.

If you have something like FCP, you can match settings to the presets within that, sometimes a good starting point.
