It is in a interlaced wrapper.

Unless you are doing 24P, which I know very little about, you should just record 30P and set the sequence to the 1080i. You will still get the goodness of progressive!

Make sure you are not trying to use all 4/8 of your cores with Compressor (cluster). It will crash every single time. It is not supported by Apples very own Hardware, OS and Software.

I had such a nightmare with it I haven’t even touched that menu item in quite a while. Compressor and FCP need some TLC by the developers.

Tick you off? Tell me about it.

Same here. This is ridiculous on FCP’s part. Let’s take a 17Mb/s file (at most) and upconvert it into a 130Mb/s file.

    What is this all about?

Can’t Apple’s own 8 core computers handle some AVCHD footage? Or must we submit to their weak support for their own hardware and buy more hard drives because they can’t handle native AVCHD on their super computers?

    This is weak Apple.

I would really love to see this feature soon. I am acquiring a large amount of interviews and am transcribing all of them. I will be doing all of the editing as well. Most of my work will be based on transcripts.

This needs to be in Final Cut, yesterday!

  • I just got a HF10 and had some issues getting it to show in FCP 6.0.5.

I finally got it working. The camera may need to be powered down and unplugged if the camera does not mount as a drive the first time(s). Don’t worry about unplugging the usb cable. I just did it about 20 times when it said not to.

Eventually the camera will show up, mounted as a drive. Open it up and see if you can browse the folders. When you are able to browse the folders then you can do a shift+command+8 and log and transfer.

I am not to happy about it converting to AppleProRes by default nor the secondary option of Apple Intermediate Codec as they are both way larger than the original files.

If I wanted a GB per minute I would have saved up for a bloody HPX-170. Part of my reasoning for getting this camera was that it takes up less space than Mini DV.

Picture looks amazing, far better than our XL2! I am talking about definition not all the other stuff. I am really itching for a HMC-150 but again if all this AVCHD footage is going to be upconverted into AppleProRes 1GB/minute then why not just get a HPX-170 and be done with it?

Anyways, good luck with the HF10. I am still playing with mine.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions.

A trick you can use is to “Send to Motion” then use the smooth cam in there. It will only analyze the clip and save a ton of time, especially since FCP can’t use all 8 cores anyways. Our brand new 8 core 3.2 Ghz mac pro only uses 35% of it’s power to analyze using smooth cam.

I am amazed that this BUG is in FCP. I hope they fix it soon or give you the option to analyze the clip vs. the whole file.

It should at least be the default to only analyze the clip.

    Cheers,

November 5, 2008 at 12:30 am in reply to: 30p drop frame and 60i non-drop frame in multicam mode

    Hey Jeremy,

The timecode drifts because on is drop and one is non-drop. It is a pain because everytime I want to match some clips up I need to figure it out all over again.

I was thinking of JES deinterlacer because FCP deinterlacer is horrid. What you say makes sense though and I would not like to create a bunch of clips that hog extra space. I did some searching and realize that many of you use some more robust built in plugin deinterlacers such as Natress’s.

    Thanks

    Hey Jeremy,

I am using JES deinterlacer to make the clips look similar. Is there any problem with using this before editing to make the clips look similar?

To my eye it looks very nice. It gives me a a file identical in size. I like it. Timecode is already way messed up. Sure would have been easier if the timecode didn’t drift, then I could just find the exact number between the codes and use that everytime. But instead I need to figure it out for every take. 4 days of shooting with drifted time code.

But as you are correct, at least the frames all match up!

I guess this is how you get experience!

So, what are your thoughts on using JES deinterlacer to make things look similar?

  • Thanks for the tips on the cell phones!

That is good feedback. We’ll see what Primatte Keyer Pro does to it. I am concerned about where it meets the fabric. Keying is just so much fun!

Do you think Rosebrand would match up with EEFX fabric pretty good?
