[Francis Riley] “Anyone know an easy way to convert Canon HD footage, which uses the AVHCD codec so that it can be edited on FC5 or later?

Is there a plugin or will I need to purchase software to do so?”

I own a Canon HF10 and the only way I know of right now is to convert to ProRes. The ProRes turns out nicely and is easily editable but the file size is 5 times larger.

The next FCS is supposed to be able to edit AVCHD natively. Until then we will have to wait. I have researched this stuff quite a bit. There is a program called Clipwrapper that takes *.m2t and *.m2ts files and rewraps them into *.mov files but it does not work for the AVCHD stuff only mpeg2 stuff.

I am a bit bummed about this but just hope they do it right when they do get around to it. FCP doesn’t even use most of the 8 cores anyways. Hopefully when they add support, FCP will be optimized for use with multicores and clusters.

My educated guess is that we will not see the AVCHD capable FCP until AFTER Snow Leopard is released. Once Snow Leopard is released we can start keeping our eyes out for the latest and greatest FCP.

An AJA Io HD and some of the other AJA cards will do a bug in real time. I know a IO HD will for sure because I am thinking of getting one and noticed that as a feature that I don’t have an immediate need for but thought it may be helpful later on down the road.

Have you tried using your camera as a webcam? This would be the first step that I would take. Once you have that working you should be able to figure out the voiceover tool, although I haven’t used it yet.

Try using it for Justin.tv or Mogulus.com. If you can’t get that working you most likely will never get the VO tool to work.

I had this problem as well with some Livetype and FCP. On playback and render the text would tear and be jumpy all over the place.

I eventually was guided by David Weiss towards the built in Boris 3D text tool. Worked like a charm!

    Agreed.

Apple’s marketing department is light years ahead of the code. It is borderline false advertising on some occasions.

Maybe someday it will be true.

I also should add that I found out that the “Finder” replacement, “Path Finder”, to sort folders at the top by default! It does cost $20 but is far worth the money big time as “Finder” is just not that great of a “finder”, haha.

So my Ubuntu/Windows carry over habits are now complete!
