using voiceover tool
Thought I would try voiceover tool for the first time using a camcorder as a source. I have a Sony PDX10 camcorder with mic attached, firewire cable into G5. I selected DV audio as the input in the voiceover drop down window, 48KHz selected, selected in and out points, but no audio shows on the meter or when I hit record. To check cables. I went in to log and capture, selected capture audio only and was able to capture audio so I presume cables are ok. I need to see the video playing as I capture audio for the project I am about to undertake, so log and capture no good in this respect. Have I set up this tool incorrectly or is it something to do with the way DV audio is embedded with video over the firewire link? Anyone able to shed some light?

It’s been a while since I used the VO Tool. I’m not clear if you want to simultaneously record video while also recording VO audio. If so, you can’t do that. It works by letting you view already captured video and recording VO to it. You mentioned you chose DV Audio in the Source pull-down. You didn’t mention your choice for Input. There are two choices there: Line In and Digital. Try switching from the existing choice to the other and see if it works.

The manual says you can use a DV camera for voiceover but you have to disable external video before doing this (View>ExternalVideo to Off or press cmd-F12)

Sorry, just want to record audio voiceover whilst the client watches video playback on the timeline. Tried both line in and digital in, sod all on the meter, no recording.

external video is off, dvaudio selected, 48khz sampling, selected in and outs, hit record goes thru the motions of recording voiceover, places voiceover clip in correct track position, but has not recorded any audio. Baffled!

Hm – can’t explain that one. I’m at loss.
I assume you could see from the meters that audio was coming in?Try other audio channel on the camera.
Try change Capture setting in FCP (If external video has something to do with it then why not Capture settings)Hope one of these helps!

Does your camera allow audio passthrough? Not all of them do.

I think that this is the problem, the PDX10 camcorder is sending both video and audio over firewire – and when Log and Capture is used, either Audio or video or both can be selected for capturing but when the Voiceover tool software is used – selecting DVAudio as the source- nothing is being registered on the meters. Anyone got recommendations for either M-Audio or similar, firewire or usb interface to use with external mic? Thanks again to all who have contributed to this thread.

Try searching the Cow for Voice Over tool and see what pops up. I’m sure you’ll get a bunch of hits. Just be careful. A lot of these devices work strangely with the Voice Over Tool. Make sure you can return the product. If you have a local rerseller, maybe they’ll lend you a unit to test.
Years ago (pre-Tiger) we tried an Edirol UA-25 and had problems. As I recall it intermittently dropped out audio. Shortly thereafter we installed Pro Tools and didn’t need the VO Tool anymore.

Have you tried using your camera as a webcam? This would be the first step that I would take. Once you have that working you should be able to figure out the voiceover tool, although I haven’t used it yet.
Try using it for Justin.tv or Mogulus.com. If you can’t get that working you most likely will never get the VO tool to work.
