    Hi,

I am doing work at a network and I always brag about how I love final cut so much more than Avid.
But Avid is CRUSHING me when it comes to rendering network bugs onto our programs.

I am working in 8-bit 4:2:2 sequences. When i am done with a show I have to add either a bug comprised of a beauty and a matte, or a bug that is rendered out as QT movie with an alpha channel.

This bug has to cover entire show, which could be anywhere from 20-50 minutes long. The render time
required to do this…well, I can’t even talk about it without feeling nauseous. Is there something I can do so that I don’t have to render bugs?

More info—these sequences, upon output, have only one layer of video and I add the beauty and matte/or alpha movie bug. Thanks, Cat

Not sure if this will work for you but if you have a multi core machine you could export a self contained QT of your show Pre-bug.

Open the new QT in compressor, add the bug overlay using the “watermark” option in compressor, then export to the same codec using a virtual cluster to encode.

I dont think u can use a .mov file as the watermark source, so this will only work if your bug is static.

Get an AJA Kona board. It will add the bug in realtime during output as a key.

    Thanks.

What I ended up doing was taking the bug into AE and exporting a Tff with Alpha. Then I put on
FCP seq and did not have to render…phew.

But, you were right…we had to configure with a still image…

I’m using an AJA Kona card…is that what you mean?

You must not have “Render Full” selected in your render settings. If you do any dissolves with the bug, or dissolve from bug to bug, double check that they are smooth. Without “Render Full” GFX like these can shift fields during transitions.

If you have a Kona3, you can add a graphic “downstream” as the sequence plays out thru the Kona. It’s real time with no rendering involved. You simply open the Kona Control Panel and enable the feature. You can then open the graphic element that you want added to the output. Very simple and easy. I use it all the time to put Ownership/copyright info over ruff cuts of projects in an attempt to prevent them from ending up on UTube.

An AJA Io HD and some of the other AJA cards will do a bug in real time. I know a IO HD will for sure because I am thinking of getting one and noticed that as a feature that I don’t have an immediate need for but thought it may be helpful later on down the road.
