There are other devices that connect direct to the camera that will also capture direct to hard drive. Several are available such as the “Firestore” devices. This wouldn’t require an actual computer for each camera.

[ Steve (Learning)] “Two further things I have noticed when playing the time line with an external monitor connected and everything enabled. I just get a black screen in the preview window of Vegas which says – (Preview in external monitor). If doing the same thing with my finished project which has been rendered to MPEG 2 but is still on the time line as a Veg. file I get the same message ( Preview in external monitor) with the words (Frame recompressed) in red letters underneath.
Is this normal or is Vegas just telling me that the time line has be recompressed to MPEG 2?”
It is normal for it to show “Preview on external monitor” when playing back the timeline. It actually sends DV-AVI over the firewire connection. If your timeline is not straight DV-AVI (i.e. you’ve added an effect or transition or any other change or the footage is NOT DV-AVI) then it has to be converted to DV-AVI and shows “Frame Recompressed” at those time. So, if you put MPEG2 on the timeline and play it back via external preview, it has to convert it back to DV-AVI for preview purposes. MPEG2 should be your destination format – not one for editing.

As Gary said, if you want it mixed “as it happens”, you’ll need a hardware switcher and simply capture the mixed video while it happens – for post mixing it doesn’t eliminate the need to capture multiple camera’s tapes into Vegas.
What “live switching” in this context means is that you don’t have to stop playback of the timeline in order to switch to a different camera. In Vegas 5, you have to stop playback, change the camera, and then restart playback. In Vegas 6.0b or newer, you can simply change cameras and the playback will give a very brief pause but then continue.

Are these VBR encoded MP3 files? I don’t believe Vegas works with VBR encoded MP3 files. Can you use some other program to convert them to WAV?

My recommendation as a test would be to do several prerenders over some various sections of the project (you can even pre-render the entire project if you want) but manually do it over smaller sections. Definitely try to prerender over the small section where it’s currently dying. Start about a second before that point and stop several sections after that point just to verify it will render.

Wow… you HAVE to be the southernmost user of Vegas! First of all, what version of Vegas are you using? This will be the first place to start.

When I can’t move them any further, I just manually change the X and Y numbers in the boxes. I don’t know why it won’t let you move them farther without manually changing the numbers but do know that method works.
