Trouble viewing work on external monitor in Vegas 5

Try ‘printing to tape’ a small section from time line. You do not need a tape in camcorder if you choose manual option. If the picture appears in your LCD screen then the camcorder is DV-IN enabled.

The VX2100 does support passthrough. The fact that it is a PAL cam should have no bearing. Your setup sounds fine to me – one thing you should check is what setting your Ilink is set to as far as IO is concerned – somehow I think this is where your problem lies.

Check these settings and let us know what you find.

Just one comment.
Although the Sony VX2000 manual was mentioning DV-in/DV-out, this option in the Pal version was for an obscure reason factory disabled. Some vendors were even proposing (wiht a high risk of damaging the camera) to “patch” the internal components to make it working !
I just hope Sony didn’t do the same for the VX2100 ….

Hi Folks

First can I say thank you very much for such a friendly and informed response. I was really encouraged to receive such support from my first post on this forum!

Two further things I have noticed when playing the time line with an external monitor connected and everything enabled. I just get a black screen in the preview window of Vegas which says – (Preview in external monitor). If doing the same thing with my finished project which has been rendered to MPEG 2 but is still on the time line as a Veg. file I get the same message ( Preview in external monitor) with the words (Frame recompressed) in red letters underneath.

Is this normal or is Vegas just telling me that the time line has be recompressed to MPEG 2?

Gary – I am afraid the answer to your question is no!

Mahesh – I did try printing a small section of tape to the time line but the picture did not appear in the LCD screen. I also got an error message saying that it could not print to tape as ‘An error occurred while creating the media file’ and
‘No compatible video codec was found’.

Jeremy – Sorry if I am a bit naive but I don’t know what you mean by the IO setting in relation to the Ilink. If you could clarify I would be grateful and I will check it out.

Guyb – You could be right. I will check with Sony UK on Monday to find out!

Error messages you get when you print to tape suggests that Vegas does not recognise the camera.
A simple cause may be that the project is not set to PAL. I am sure you have checked this but
please check File>properties ans see that project is set to PAL. The other place to check is Options>preferences>videodevice is set to PAL DV.
I find that sometimes I have to switch between PAL DV – PAL DV wide screen>apply a few times to get Vegas to switch to ext monitor.

If the above does not work, then it is very likely the camera is not switched to DV-IN.

It is normal for it to show “Preview on external monitor” when playing back the timeline. It actually sends DV-AVI over the firewire connection. If your timeline is not straight DV-AVI (i.e. you’ve added an effect or transition or any other change or the footage is NOT DV-AVI) then it has to be converted to DV-AVI and shows “Frame Recompressed” at those time. So, if you put MPEG2 on the timeline and play it back via external preview, it has to convert it back to DV-AVI for preview purposes. MPEG2 should be your destination format – not one for editing.

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, both the PAL settings were set correctly in File>properties and Options>preferences>video device.

I also tried switching between PAL DV and PAL DV Widescreen a few times, as in both modes above but still no joy.

As you say it looks like I don’t have DV-In on this camcorder. I am going to call Sony UK tomorrow to find out.

Thanks for putting me in the picture (pardon the pun)! The time line of my finished project had transitions and other generated media which is when I got “Frame Recompressed”. Now I know why!

To prove your point I down loaded a fresh clip without any transitions or any other alteration and just got the “Preview on external monitor”. Thanks for explaining.

Sorry I didn’t make myself clear but I didn’t have an MPEG 2 project on the time line and therefore was not trying to edit it. It’s just that the time line had been rendered to MPEG 2 after my project was finished. The resulting MPEG 2 file is in my videos folder.
