When you show up at the airport in SA, what are you going to tell immigration when they ask you what your purpose of visiting is?
If all you are bringing is a small handicam, you might get away with claiming you are a tourist. But then again you might not and end up in jail or deported for lieing to immigration.
You need a work permit for just about any visit to a foriegn country. This will take some time and effort. Call the nearest consulate of the country you are visiting. You will need to justify your working in their country vs. just hiring somebody locally. You are a rich American taking jobs from poor Brazilians.
I just shot for a week in Japan. The production company dealt with the consulate and arranged my work visa and also handled the carnet. Make sure you follow ALL of the instructions on getting the carnet stamped at every turn.

December 29, 2005 at 7:15 pm in reply to: Lighting Tip, using HDR-FX1 indoors

Lighting for film or video has 3 basic issues to deal with:
Exposure, contrast and the ‘quality’ of the lighting scheme.
Exposure is what it is. You need enough for the system you are using, film or video.
Contrast is usually easier to deal with on film so video might need a bit more soft fill light.
Quality of the lighting scheme shouldn’t change from film to video except to deal with the contrast issues. This is a matter of taste and appropriateness to the scene.
If you have been shooting film, then video should be easier as you can have a quality monitor to instantly see your results.
A ‘3 point lighting kit’ has no meaning in the dramatic film arena. You light the scene to look as you want it to look which might take one light or 50 lights along with a bunch of controlling equipment like flags, nets, dimmers, clips, cards, gells, etc.

Ask them to write out an outline as best they can, putting in as much info as they can. Have them include examples of other shows this one will be like and ask what the planned distibution will be.

What this does is force them to do some work. For some, that will end it all right there! If they actually do an outline, you will have some idea of what they are considering.

Usually, a question like this is from someone looking to spend $200.

Barry posted…”One thing to consider is if the internal battery in your camera is discharged. Remove the external battery and plug it into the AC power supply and leave it there for at least four hours; that should recharge the internal battery. Sometimes timecode weirdness when powering off the cam can be caused by a run-down internal battery.”

To clarify, you’re saying put the AC adapter on the camera and that will charge the internal battery? Didn’t know the internal battery was rechargable.
How long is this battery supposed to hold a charge? I never use my AC adapter.

I’ve had the same problem when changing batteries and I do a timecode regen and it picks it up with no problem. No prerecording the tape or any other stuff.

Just got back from Tokyo. Used my 110v lights with no changes, except to use 2-fer ground lifts. All the plugs in Japan are 2 prong instead of 3 prong. Saw no real issues with using my fixtures on 100v.

I was referring to the metal case OF the camera. The camera is made with a metal case as opposed to plastic which some of the mini DV cameras have. I think that helped with the durability of the camera. Sorry if I wasn’t clear on that.

  • Go to the PSC website and call or e-mail them. They are very helpful. You will get the straight answer.

Gotta have 2 MRXp 2000 gasmotrons and at least 1 vilsopak 1000. Otherwise you won’t be able to accomplish a thing.
