I own a DVX100A. I have been critical of the durability of the mini DV class of camera. But I’d like to report the positive when I experience it.
I was shooting while riding in the tail end of a small trolley. The driver made a sharp U-turn and flipped over the car I was in. The DVX took many severe whacks on the pavement before the talent could pick it up out of my hands. I was kind of busy holding the car up off me and getting dragged by the trolley. The talent managed to mostly stay in the car. The camera continued rolling the whole time. We checked it out and it continued to work. We had a clamshell DV player so we could check tape externally and all was fine. EMS patched me up and we continued on our way. Further tape checks in the edit room showed no issues with post-accident footage.
The metal case of the camera held up very well. My compliments to Panasonic for a very durable camera.

How many stitches did EMS put in the driver’s skull?

So if I read right the camera was in a case? If so isn’t it possible that it was more the durability of the case than the camera?

I was referring to the metal case OF the camera. The camera is made with a metal case as opposed to plastic which some of the mini DV cameras have. I think that helped with the durability of the camera. Sorry if I wasn’t clear on that.

aahh I’m glad to hear it. I suppose I am a bit cynical of cameras durability. I also own a dvx and I film while rollerblading( i’m an extreme sports videographer) so I’m always a bit nervous of my camera’s durability. Glad to hear your camera made it… hopefully if and when mine goes through something similar it’ll make it too 🙂
