I’m sure we all get many of these emails. How do you answer? The old “How much does it cost to build a house” What is your typical response to this email I received below.

    Have a great holiday everyone.

    Hi,

I’m just wondering how much it would cost to produce a 30 min long kids show.

    Thanks,

    Joe + Jess

My usual response is that it’s like buying a car by the foot.

…in which case, all of us could most likely afford a Porsche Carrera.

    …etc, etc.

    Better response

Kid’s will not watch crap so deal with the budget like an adult and expect to pay professional rates for a quality show.

So now how much do you have in your piggy bank for episode one?

I love to ask them the question “How long is a piece of string?” It can be many lengths, of course.

I would start by setting up a meeting to get an idea of what they want to do. Have they already produced other shows? Is this a public access show, or a show they hope to sell to the cable outlets? Is it a project you want to work on?

I suppose I would formulate many questions in my mind before the meeting and then go in there and plan to do a lot of listening.

I like to give clients a range they can expect to pay. In this case, I would estimate somewhere between $500.00 and $500,000.

    HA, HA, HA!!!!

That’s the best idea I’ve ever heard. The next person that calls me asking about a “rough estimate” for a 30 minute program, I’ll tell them that we charge by the foot. I can hear the eyebrows scrunching right now.

Ask them to write out an outline as best they can, putting in as much info as they can. Have them include examples of other shows this one will be like and ask what the planned distibution will be.

What this does is force them to do some work. For some, that will end it all right there! If they actually do an outline, you will have some idea of what they are considering.

Usually, a question like this is from someone looking to spend $200.
