Great advice from all. I don’t know if such jobs exist anymore, but the first editing job I had right out of college, many years ago, was cutting time out of features for a local TV station. It was a great education. Taking features apart while trying to keep the story intact taught me a lot about visual story telling and editing technique. Of course the best films are the hardest to cut down. I once had to get almost 30 min. out of “Citizen Kane”! After complaining to the production manager and throwing up, I was able to get the time out, but it did destroy the film for anyone who knew it. I’m sure Wells was spinning…

And like everyone has said, watch what’s being done. Here’s a link to some audition reels of top end commercial directors and editors: https://www.ukshowreels.tv/index.php. You can check out many spots here and stop and rewind to see the techniques they used.

Like everything in life, just do what feels good.

In the audio tool select PH (Peak Hold) and a dialogue will appear. Select Output Settings. In the dialogue that comes up there will be a choice of Stero, Mono, or Direct Out. Select Direct Out and route your audio channels to whichever channel you want them to be on the tape, i.e. 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc. When you output to tape the audio will be split to the channels you choose.
Timecode burnin? Play the tape out with character selected and make a dub. Unless you have a day to render the Illusion efx there is no way to get timecode burnin from AVID that I can find.

Thanks Willie. That all makes since. However maybe I wasn’t clear on what I’m trying to accomplish. If I have selected a section of the track by dragging from the curser forward for, say 1:00, and I want to hear just the last :15 of the selected track to make sure I’m at the end edit point I can’t play from that point without loosing my in point. The cue point you suggested might work but I haven’t had a chance to work on it yet. So, is there a way to play from anywhere in a selected area and keep the in and out points that are selected?

Yes. But this isn’t leader, it’s a countdown that will be on a large projection screen for a break in a meeting, i.e., “return in 15:00”. It’s keyed over video and stays up for 15min. to tell the attendees when to come back. I found a source in VisArts graphic generater we use for lower thirds in broadcast. Thanks for all the suggestions.

The last one we did was a 30:00 countdown on an old Texas! Thanks for the suggestion about AE. The problem yesterday was the gfx guy was busy and had the AE box tied up. I did it by using the Illusion efx timecode for 15:00, rendered it for about 50:00 and then played it back in reverse while recording on the digi deck. Then I diged that into AVID and layed it in, put a luma key on it and it works, sort of…. Not the recommended way to spend the afternoon! I would still like to find a plug in that would count down.

    Thanks…

What are the settings for google. I tried to find out on their site, but had to sign up to get to it….sorry…. Anyway it looks like a very small file. I have seen this when compressing files to small size, low bit rate, etc. I suggest trying a QT instead of a QT Reference and a better compression program if you have it, like Procorder. I have cleaned up a lot of bad compression from Sorrenson by using Procorder with the same settings. Just some thoughts…

This month’s edition of the NAPP magazine, I think it is called Photoshop User, has a step by step tutorial on this.

You could google NAPP and get info on the organization and the magazine. I don’t know if you can get it outside the organization.

We do a lot of DVDs and the best combination we have found is Procorder for compression and Encore for authoring. Quick and simple. We don’t do mass duplication so the DLT problems aren’t important to us, but that might be something to consider if it’s needed for you productions.
