How do I go about doing a split track audio layoff to tape. Also, the most convenient method of adding a timecode burn in would be helpful as well.

With split track usually all your voice over/dialog is on one channel and music and sfx on the other. At least in the news world this is done so that when they capture from tape, they can throw in their own voiceover if they choose to (just throw out the VO track from the tape).
Tricky part is if you already have a stereo mix with vo/music/sfx thrown across both channels in the Avid timeline, you’ll need to go back and adjust the mix so that all the VO is on one and all the music/sfx is on the other, before laying off to tape.

In the audio tool select PH (Peak Hold) and a dialogue will appear. Select Output Settings. In the dialogue that comes up there will be a choice of Stero, Mono, or Direct Out. Select Direct Out and route your audio channels to whichever channel you want them to be on the tape, i.e. 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc. When you output to tape the audio will be split to the channels you choose.
Timecode burnin? Play the tape out with character selected and make a dub. Unless you have a day to render the Illusion efx there is no way to get timecode burnin from AVID that I can find.
