I second the idea of sending a NTSC disk. We do it all the time. Check with your end user. However, if you really need the PAL here’s what we do: Set the encoder to use PAL and everything from that point on in your authoring program should stay PAL. We use Procoder, but I think Sorenson will do this as well. The problem is, of course, being able to playback on a DVD player. You should be able to check it on a computer though.

You could try Zytech. It does everthing you asked for and more, but it might be too expensive. Worth checking out.

May 15, 2007 at 8:44 pm in reply to: Avid FX / Boris Red Question…

In a previous version (now running 2.4.6) Adrenaline, sometimes the system would lock up when opening the AFX , so I would use Red instead. The functions seem to be the same and I didn’t get the crashes with Red. Just a thought.

You are right. It was in the settings. I finally found the problem. I had done a 16 X 9 version of the project earlier and failed to reset the size in the Quick Time to 4 X 3. It’s sometimes amazing how many times you can look at something and not see a small error! Thanks for the response.

On Adrenaline there are the BCC3 File Burn and Film Damage efx that work great. I don’t know if they are normally availableon express, but you should be able to get them from Boris.

January 26, 2007 at 8:45 pm in reply to: Can I analyze a Frequency in Avid?

Reminds me of the old adage “Those that can’t do, teach”. Either the teacher said take out the frequency when he meant take down the level, or possible you heard him wrong, but removing the frequence of the vo would, as has been said, remove the music at that point. It would sound like a train wreck… Ask the teacher again. It would be interesting to know what he really meant.

November 30, 2006 at 6:14 pm in reply to: Advice on becoming an editor

In addition to all the good advice above, here’s aother suggestion. A few years ago there was a course called “Avid Boot Camp” here in the States. It was an intense workshop where you went through the entire process of editing a feature film and in the end worked with a director on an independant project. I think it was held in Portland, Oragon. It was a good look at the feature film industry and it gave you good connections. There may be something like it in the UK. Google Avid Boot Camp.

  • We use a system called Xytech, I think the company is called Xytech Enterprise. It will allow you to search tapes by several criteria: tape numbers, job number, work order number, bar code, etc. if you use such naming devices. It also can keep your editing schedule, billing, inventory, client info., etc. It’s not easy to use, but once it’s set up and you decide which parts fit your work situation, it can save you hours of tape scanning. There is even an online data base you can subscribe to that allows you to enter any description of a tape, i.e. “cu house pan left at sunset” and it will do a word search for it. It’s huge, cumbersome at first and probably pretty expensive (I don’t know, the company pays for it.) but it can be great to type in “sunset” and get a list of all the tapes with sunset shots. Of course someone has to enter the data originally! Do a search for Xytech. They are usually at NAB.

October 12, 2006 at 5:47 pm in reply to: Audition Timeline?

I had a similar question recently and Wille suggested I use the cue function. It’s shortcut F8. As you play the timeline you can hit F8 and it will place a cue at that point. I have been editing with the cue window open and it’s a simple thing to stop using the space bar and hit the auto play for the cue you just entered and the timeline will play from that point. Then it’s easy to move your cursor to that point the select your edit. Play with the cue function. It’ll speed up your edit and lessen your frustration.

The pause button is a good solution too, but it requires hitting it with the mouse and I am usually late with that method.
