my company just got orders for several DVD’s that we made. They are in NTSC format. They need to be PAL.

Is there a simple solution to this? Can i export out of avid somehow as PAL even though the footage is NTSC?

I use SONIC dvd authoring program.

you best bet under the gun is to take on to a dup house and have em do it.

well, I’ve never hooked one up. In linear land, it’s an in and out of the transcoder from one deck to the other. I honestly don’t know with a DVD. I assume ya plug it in, pop in a disc, load another one, push a button and ya gotta pal disc.
If they are eager to write a check, let em, give it a whirl and report back.

Unless you definitely have a way to view your finished product and assure it works, I would let a dub house do it. I’ve recently had to do this for DVD. They create PAL MPEGs to use. But like I mentioned, they have a way to view final file.

i just checked my SONIC dvd authoring program and i can select PAL as my source encode.

Do you know if i need to be playing the tape off of a PAL deck? or can i use NTSC deck and encode it with a PAL setting?

also you are saying I need a PAL playback deck and monitor as well?

It sounds like you can encode as PAL… but once you’ve created the DVD, you’ll need PAL equipment to check playback and functionality. That’s my understanding. You’ll also need to redesign your graphics for the PAL video frame (800 something or other by 576). Playing the PAL video back on your computer is not a problem… just the real world check of playback from DVD player. My dub/conversion house also stated that many player in Europe will play back NTSC and PAL no problem. But the last NTSC DVD sent overseas didn’t work.

Just about everyone can play an NTSC disc in the UK. Give it a try before you start out on a mega job. I make NTSC DVDs in the UK and have full NTSC DVD play and monitoring kit to check it works before despatch. If you don’t have this as a PAL facilty you could be digging a big hole for yourself.

I second the idea of sending a NTSC disk. We do it all the time. Check with your end user. However, if you really need the PAL here’s what we do: Set the encoder to use PAL and everything from that point on in your authoring program should stay PAL. We use Procoder, but I think Sorenson will do this as well. The problem is, of course, being able to playback on a DVD player. You should be able to check it on a computer though.
