Avid FX / Boris Red Question…
Posted by Dave Potts on May 14, 2007 at 2:53 pmIs there a difference, or is Avid just branding Boris Red with the Avid name? Are there any advantages to purchasing Red, or are they they one and the same?
Thanks,
Dave Potts

May 14, 2007 at 4:28 pmI started using Boris FX and Graffiti LTD since it came with my Avid Express Pro system. Just recently I upgraded to Boris Red 4.0 and also saw that Avid FX was added to my FX bin.
My brief time playing with Avid FX is that is was just Boris Red with a few cosmetic differences. I haven’t done much in the way of experimentation to see if they function the same way or not but I’m sure there are others who have.
I had gone through some Boris tutorials so I just stuck with the Boris interface since it was the most familiar to me. It can also be run as a standalone program while I don’t think Avid FX can.

May 14, 2007 at 6:52 pmGood to know, especially the part about running as a stand-alone. We’ve got a couple of Adrenalines, but it would be a big benefit to be able to run Red on additional systems as well.
Thanks!

May 15, 2007 at 8:44 pmIn a previous version (now running 2.4.6) Adrenaline, sometimes the system would lock up when opening the AFX , so I would use Red instead. The functions seem to be the same and I didn’t get the crashes with Red. Just a thought.

May 16, 2007 at 4:20 pmThey’re the same program, only Avid FX has been cosmetically changed (as previously mentioned), with a few subtle color changes and a name change. Plus, while you can use it as a plugin inside of Avid’s mainstream NLE’s, as well as in stand-alone mode, you CAN’T use it as a plugin inside of the other NLE hosts supported by Red. It’s also dongle-locked (which I don’t think Red is). I don’t know if it still is, but for quite a while, it was cheaper to buy the Studio Toolkit from Avid (getting Avid FX, 3D, and DVD) for about $300 less than Red cost by itself.
Hope that helps. Take care.

May 16, 2007 at 4:54 pmExcellent, that helps a lot. We’ve got Avid FX on our Adrenalines, but haven’t had a chance to get into it, and I just downloaded a trial of Red to check it out and see if it was the same and would be something that we could run on a standalone graphics workstation.
Cheers,
