I captured from a Sony PD170. This is my first time encountering this issue, normally I capture from a DSR-25 DVCam Deck, but I sold that, and figured I’d just capture from the camera…..
So what is my solution? I know the audio is embedded in the file, as the captured clip plays fine in media player….. woudl converting the file to some avi format with a different audio codec work? then how can I not lose what I’ve already cut on the timeline…???

Export to AVI in PP2, FCP will recoginize it, but you may have to render it depending on your setup/

By default FCP sets the Scratch disks which include Audio, Capture and a few others to your documents folder. Look for the Final Cut folder in your docs and clean out what you don’t need. Rendered files can all be trashed, but you will have to re-render a project if you open it up again….
Word of caution on external Hard Drives, If it’s a regular ide or eide drive hooked through firewire or usb, I wouldn’t use it to store projects on. I used to do that, on two firewire 500GB EIDE drives, and I lost both of them, along with the data. Get Internal Sata’s or some sort of Raid array…..

this really needs to be posted in FCP Basics….
But Here ya go…
I suggest either a Macbook Pro (only if you want/need to edit wherever) otherwise, I suggest get yourself a good G5 with 4gig of ram, and at least two 250GB SATA drives internal. That along with the FCP package, all you will need is a camera or deck to hook to it.
Your format is dependent on the deck or camera you hook up to it.
My setup is a G5 W/ a 250 Sata System Drive and a 750gb Sata Data drive. I have a DSR25 DVCAM Mini DV Deck hooked to it through the firewire port, and I can hook up any other video drvice to the input of the deck and use the deck as a pass through for whatever format I choose if it doens’t go in via firewire itself….
Unless you have special output card the output will be on your firewire port. So i output back to my deck, then use the video out of the deck to feed A/V to my NTSC Monitor.
Hope this helps you figure out what you need to do…
P.S., Welcome to the Light! You’ll love editing on the mac with FCP.

Ensure your Audio output is set to firewire and not built-in or something else. It’s at the bottom of the edit menu.

Always, black your tapes. This establishes a time code that will be used for the life of the tape. Even brand new tapes. Some decks will allow you to get away without stripping the tape first, but it’s best to always put this in to practice.

Double layer the clip, mask off the top layer, move it over slightly and add a feather touch to it. this should “Mask” the dead pixel.
This works well for me when I key something that has a simular key color in it.

Or select all the clips you wish to add the efx to and then drag and drop it on one, with them all selected.

It works great for reference.

yes. They play just fine on the timeline also.
heres where it gets even wierder (is that a word?) more wierd….If I click the clip once it’s on the timeline it will play in the viewer, but clicking on it from the bin, it doesn’t…. freaky….
I sometimes like to mark my in’s and out’s on the viewer, instead of cutting it on the TL, thus, te reason I’m crying about it….
