Vegas 5 won’t allow for drag n’ drop from SxS or P2.
Firestore with DV, yes. DR60 with DV, yes.
Firestore w/HDV, no. DR60 with HDV, no.
P2? Panasonic wouldn’t license their reader to Sony, so the DVCProHD content on the card must be converted using a tool like Raylight from DVFilm.
SxS? Vegas 5 is old software, and isn’t set up to manage .mxf file formats. Upgrade to at least Vegas 7, but Vegas Pro8 is optimized.
BTW, Vegas Pro 8 can support EX streams at a full 1920 x 1080 vs 1440 x 1080 that most apps need.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Unless you shoot on greenscreen or shoot a locked-down camera and use difference masking, I can’t think of a way you could reasonably do this without rotoscoping (very challenging).
Greenscreen is easy, can be cheap, and will immediately remove the border limits you’re talking about.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Sundance Media Group have four EX cams. Obviously, we like them. I’ve skydived with them, and had them in sub zero weather. Haven’t worked with them in high heat yet, which is our biggest fear at the moment.
As far as platform….at the moment, the only app that can manage the clips at full rez without weird or timeconsuming conversion, is Sony Vegas. But…I’ve converted the clips for use in FCS and Avid…It’s all about which app you know, vs which app you think you want. I happen to prefer Vegas, and run it on a MacBook Pro since I often am using FCS for clients that think that’s what they want. I’m also a big user of Motion…so I’m glad to have access to both. I like that Vegas manages the full 1920 x 1080 stream, on a Quad Core system it simply screams. My G5 is older, so it’s not as fast as I’d like it to be.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Yes, when you render the project, it will be equal to or near the quality which you began/shot with. However, it’s MPEG, so there is some loss. How visible the loss is will depend on how much you did to the frames. If you do nothing to the frames, on a first pass/render, you should not be able to detect any difference between the camera content and the final render.

Chances are that you’re seeing it reduced due to how your Preview Window is set up. Set preview window to Best/full, and it should appear perfectly. However, it also is too high of a resolution for Vegas to be editing MPEG, so you’ll likely want to leave this setting at Preview/Auto

Right click, choose Properties, and set the undersample rate is one way.
Another way to get a more extreme undersample/stagger/low frame rate look is to use Ultimate S3, as it will edit frames out of any selected event, at a user-determined value.Douglas Spotted Eagle

I am 99.999% positive that the problem is due to either background software, applications, hotrodding, or other interfering factor. At least thousands of hours of HDV have been captured by roughly 30 systems here, although the bulk is done on a laptop if it’s only HDV or DV, and stored on external drives.
