The lag you’re experiencing has very little to do with the media being HD, and almost everything to do with being a high compression format. This format isn’t designed as an editing format, the frame structure is very CPU intensive (moreso than MP4/AVCHD) and is never likely going to be a fast decode…HDD speeds, RAM, none of it will help, not in the case of using VC1 as a source codec. It’s a deliver-only codec a far as most folks are concerned.

All you need to do is place the text track above the main video track. That will put the text above.
If you have modified the text properties to have a white (or any other color) background, you’ll want to open the text properties and reset the background to transparent.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Hold CTRL + SHIFT while booting Vegas. This will restore defaults. It’ll also kill any customized preferences you may have, but these only take a few moments to restore.

These aren’t “effects.” These are anime. The characters are drawn with alpha channels, then blended using compositing in the first one.
I didn’t find what you were describing in the second file nor the third, but in all of them, they’re anime, which means they can easily draw in whatever they wish to draw, and/or use masks, transparency, etc.
It’s quite easy to generate a mask that has a transparency channel, build it in Photoshop or other editor. Bring that mask into Vegas, and put your video beneath it. It will then shwo through the mask.Douglas Spotted Eagle

You could also right-click the video file in Explorer, drag to timeline, and select Video Only-Add track across time from the resulting sub-menu.
