Did you change your render settings? You might try increasing the resolution of added text to 1440 x 960 as well.

You might have the FX bypassed on your desktop.
You might have a problem with Direct X on your desktop.

Those are the first two things I’d look at. FX bypass is in the Preview window, looks like a half-moon. If it’s pressed, it could/can bypass your FX in the preview window.

In prefs, turn off “release Media” when Vegas isn’t active.
Also be sure you’re not running antivirus.
turn off all unneeded applications.
How much RAM do you have in your system? What kind of media are you using as source?
If you’re searching, particularly in Vista, it’s a HUGE system hog, leaving Vegas with little room to work.

I do assume a level of video editing experience on the part of the reader of the book, as novices generally don’t spend 600.00 on a video editing application. So…there are words in there such as “segment, cutting, packages, track motion, splining,” etc that are all found in the book’s glossary on the included DVD (there wasn’t enough paper budget to print the glossary).
There is an elementary Vegas book authored by John Rofrano and myself on Vegas Movie Studio that might help get you started.
There is no more “elementary” book on Vegas. There is one written by another author who doesn’t actually use Vegas, and it’s pretty apparent he doesn’t, when you get into TrackMOtion, Pan/Crop, and compositing modes, as simple things become fairly convoluted very quickly.
Sony has a very good package, but it doesn’t go into most of the “why things work this way” but rather “this button does this” and leaves it to you to figure out why you’d want that button to do that…
I’d like to write a very basic book on Vegas Pro, we did that for Vegas 5. It didn’t sell well.

They want it using the sheerVideo codec?…sheerVideo? that is a bit #@x!?#@…..let me not say.

Its a versatile codec, but I have never used it before and never will.
So i cannot give you any pointers where this format is concerned.
But as John pointed out to you, the ‘sorenson video 3’ is the best
format and all who use quicktime will have.

Sheervideo/Bitjazz is a TERRIFIC codec, very common in many professional post-house workflows, and is an excellent codec. Very solid, very smooth.
I’d gladly debate the merits of Sorenson 3 vs other web-based codecs in today’s landscape. Sorenson had the world by the tail…and they’ve clearly lost that hold over the past 2 years, IMO. Still good, but not as common as your post might suggest, and certainly not the best.

Quicktime is just a package. think of it like a brown bag that can hold many items. Quicktime is a package that assures that their player will play the codec that you’ve used to create your video.
I’d find out from the client exactly why they’re asking for what they want, as thre is no 720×486 standard. Sounds like they’re mixing metaphors. Specifically, why Sheer, if they’re taking an MPEG from you?? Sheer isn’t a delivery codec, it’s a post codec.
Sounds like a lot of questions weren’t asked/answered when the job was taken. That’s a rough place to be.
It also sounds like they’re getting advice from a less-than-knowledgeable third party.

WAVES has lost it, IMO. When they moved everything back to TelAviv and closed their US-based tech support, they went from the cream of the crop to the cream of the crap. Tech support is horrible, products are no longer plug n’ play, keys are hard to work with, their iLok key system is no longer useful….
They *had* the best. Paranoia and their security system, coupled with bad customer service has removed WAVES from our workflow.
