You’re right, I should ask if it’s a Decklink, or a Decklink Extreme. OP says “Decklink” so I made an assumption.

HDMI isn’t better than SDI, no. Depending on the monitor, it could even be inferior, albeit unlikely. HDMI is merely a “poor man’s SDI.”
Since we’re talking about Vegas 6 in the OP, my assumption would be we’re talking about an SD card vs HD card.

If your monitor doesn’t have an SDI card, you’ll need to use component out from the Decklink card to go component in. If you don’t have component in on your monitor, then you won’t be able to use Decklink (or any other SDI card).

AC3 is a compressed audio format
If you use the template preset, it will compress the dynamic range according to the preset parameters. If you modify the parameters to dialog at -31, and LMP set to “none,” you likely will not notice a difference between original and compressed file.Douglas Spotted Eagle

The HC9 is an interlaced camera. Capture is merely data Xfer, so whatever you shot is what gets Xferred to ‘puter.
Set your project properties to Progressive, and then render to a progressive format. You’ll not see interlacing any longer.Douglas Spotted Eagle

Export from FCP as a ProRez 4:2:2 file, or Sony .mxf (XDCAM HD) file.

Think of a veg file as a phone directory that points to every video business, photo business, and music studio in town, but the veg doesn’t actually CONTAIN those businesses, it’s just a reference guide.
A veg file only points to the video files on your computer. Nothing can open a veg file excepting Sony Vegas, because it’s only a reference format.

unfortunately, VMS doesn’t have nesting. That’s a Pro feature only.

“flattening” or rendering video is something to be avoided when possible, but as mentioned previously, Render to New Track is the appropriate method. Unless you’ve run out of tracks, I’d avoid it.
