The Glow filter, combined with mild desaturation, is where you’ll want to start.
Zenote, Magic Bullet, and New Blue all offer better Glow control than does Vegas, but in any event, that’s where you’ll start.Douglas Spotted Eagle

August 19, 2007 at 1:47 pm in reply to: why video size not full 720×480 (thin black bars on sides)Then either the source, or the project isn’t set to DV. In other words, the source and project don’t match.
There is one other potential issue; it might be that you’ve got a black background and you’re mistaking the edges of the background as edges of the frame. Right click the window to change your background color to grey or white; see if that fixes your issue.Douglas Spotted Eagle

You should indeed be in the Vegas Basics forum. 🙂
1-The VF file you see is a project file for Vegas Movie Studio. It contains no video; it’s just a pointer file to all the media your timeline has collected. You need to render to create a file that Windows Media Player or other player can open.
2-AVCHD isn’t captured, it’s transferred. Rather than “capturing” use the File/Import command.

So if no one answers, you won’t be back? 🙂
VMS8 does support AVCHD, import from the camera directly. I don’t have a UX5, but do have a CX7. Files open in VMS8.
Can you please more clearly describe your workflow?
Oops, just saw you have VMS 7…not 8. Not sure what to tell you there. I don’t have VMS 7 to test, but I believe it does not support AVCHD.Douglas Spotted Eagle

not that I’m aware of. Be cautious using any maps that you purchase; maps are copyrighted too.
Try LOC.gov for links to the archives, etc. There are a lot of old maps from the early 20th century…maybe one will work.Douglas Spotted Eagle

August 19, 2007 at 4:06 am in reply to: why video size not full 720×480 (thin black bars on sides)If the graphics are created in Pshop or other GFX editor, they should be created at 720 x 504 for correct fit, or 655 x 480. DV and MPEG are not square pixels, but your GFX editor is.

August 18, 2007 at 8:20 pm in reply to: Does rendering twice in the same format cause loss of quality? This is more or less the method I’d use, or if there is a lot of content to be cut, you might consider opening two instances of Vegas, cutting from one and pasting into the other, building an entirely new project in the second instance, with content from the timeline of the first instance. One instance of Vegas on each screen….

I’ve had .asf’s not open, but this is because it was a protected file.
No, you do not need WME to convert them in most cases…and will end up with a lesser quality file for having done so.Douglas Spotted Eagle
