Is the GL2 used? New? If used there’s probably dust/particles somewhere between the front of the lens and the CCD block. Get it to a repair facility and have it looked at. What you’re seeing is probably not the norm. If the camera is new then at least the warranty should cover the cleaning cost. Whenever I shoot with light from windows etc. in the frame, I’ll get lens flare but no spots like you’re experiencing. The lens won’t come off without tools, meaning someone had to assemble the camera so it does come apart. But if you’re unfamiliar with how it goes together (like me) let the pros do this task. My .02

Yes. Go to the link below and follow the trouble shooting guide. Your problems are originating with Compressor, which you are trying to access through FCP by choosing to export to an MPEG2 format within the program. If you exported a QT movie from FCP and used Compressor as a stand alone app you’d probably still get the same warning dialogue.

Check to make sure that your canvas is set to “Fit To Window”.
This happens to me too, about 50% of the time, along with the dropped frames warning. But when I quit FCP and open the same project again it’ll play fine. This has been going on since day 1 with FCP 5.0.4. None of my other earlier versions have ever had this problem. So you’re not alone, seamus.

First of all, try trashing the FCP preference files. Here’s a link to an article on how to do this properly and why you need to do it occasionally:

You can also get a free program that does this job for you. Just Google: FCP Rescue.
Since I’m not really sure if there’s another reason why you can capture 4:3 footage and not 16:9 footage with the same setup here’s a work around: you can try capturing your widescreen footage using the DV NTSC 48Khz (non-anamorphic) preset, since you say that’s working for you. Try a 1 or 2 min. test piece. Select your newly captured piece in FCP’s browser window, navigate to the anamorphic column and put in a checkmark. This tells FCP that your footage is not 4:3 but is actually 16:9. Your video clip should now expand to the widescreen format.
And make sure you use batch capture with in and out points instead of capture now. Much more reliable.

When the Finder is active go to: Finder (drop down menu)>Preferences and make sure “show all finder extentions” is checked.

“There’s a humidity senser in the GL2 which will give you the same ‘eject tape’ message. Are you using the camera mostly handheld? Heat is unlikely to cause an increase in head clogs. But cheap tapes or mixing wet and dry tape lubricants will.

When I bought my Sony PD170 I was quite surprised to discover that I could shake it about twice as much as my XL2 and GL2 before it started to show in the picture.

In addition, keeping OIS turned off when you don’t needd it also conserves battery power.

Running something like Norton Anti-Virus on your Mac will interfere with FCP’s capture process unless you turn off the “Auto Protect” feature. There have been numerous posts in the past of FCP users that were having big time capture problems until it was discovered their Norton program was running in the background.

[Franklin] “Is it just that FCE is limited to DV and HDV codecs?
“I’ve heard that you cannot batch capture with FCE, which for me, would be a huge minus. I’m sure there are other things that FCE can’t do that FCP can, but since I don’t have FCE the batch capture thing is something I can tell you about. Also, If the newest version of FCE doesn’t do multiclip editing I would go for FCP for just that reason alone.
