Regardless of whether you capture in HD or SD you’re still using the same imaging chips to do the capturing, so low lighting will be a problem either way. It’s generally accepted that an SD camera will do better in low light than the HD camera when the imaging chip sizes are the same on both cameras. It’s just photons and physics and you can’t change those laws.

You’d have to take out a loaner camera and try it out. Until that point you’d just be guessing whether or not you could use it for nightclubing.

G Tech has just come out with their G Raid Mini that was made for what you want to do. It looks like it will support 3 streams of DVCPro HD.

If a certain price seems too good to be true then it usually is. Stay away from places that have advertised prices that are thousands of dollars less than the competition. They may sell you the camera for less but that’s all you get: no battery or any of the other things in the box that are supposed to be included. Then they’ll make you pay extra for everything else. For comparison, if you need to find out what the everyday low price is on a camera go to someplace reputable like B & H Photo.

FCP 4.5 still had APack shipping with it, so I you have that FCP version you’ll also have APack. I still use that program with my old G4 running OS 10.3.9.

I sent George over here from the Canon Forum because it sounded like a software thing rather than a camera problem. Since I’m not a Windows or a Premiere user I couldn’t advise George on the best troubleshooting path to follow. However, a few things stand out from his posts. He states that he can’t capture using Premiere but was able to do so from other lower priced NLEs. Does this mean that the capture issue is with Premiere rather than with the OS, since the firewire port seems to be active (according to George) with other NLE’s?
In the Canon Forum he asked about capture cards which leads me to believe that his Premiere setup may also be asking about them. Is there not a setup within Permiere to choose between capturing using firewire and a 3rd party PCI capture card?

Leaving the memory battery out for any longer than a few seconds probably wouldn’t accomplish anything. If your camera defaulted to the factory settings and you had to reset the time and date etc., that will tell you that the battery was out long enough.

I’m not familiar with Premiere at all, but the fact that you can capture with other editing software tells me there’s probably nothing wrong with the XL1S but instead there’s a communication problem with Premiere. Go to the Premiere Forum and ask your question there. Talk to Aanarav Sareen, one of that forum’s leaders. I’m sure they’ll get it figured out for you.

A third party capture card is a PCI card for your computer that you plug your camera into and capture video that way instead of using the firewire port. Capture cards are used for high bandwidth video like uncompressed high definition that can’t be captured using firewire because the data stream far exceeds the capability of firewire. This explanation is oversimplified but you get the idea. Just Google companies like AJA or Blackmagic Design and you’ll learn all about capture cards.

If you’re still playing back 10 audio tracks while printing to tape try doing an audio mixdown first and see if that solves the dropped frames problem. I’m assuming you’ve already rendered any audio transitions or effects.

I would suggest posting this in the Premiere Pro Forum as it may indeed be a problem with that software not ‘seeing’ your XL1S properly. You can also reset your camera by pulling the memory battery and then putting it back in after a few seconds. Make sure your camera is off when you do this and that the main battery is also removed.
