That would be the Panasonic HVX200. It records full 1080P using Panasonic’s own DVCPro HD codec directly to a portable Firestore firewire hard drive. The 100GByte Firestore FS-100 model will hold 1.5 hours of DVCPro HD and was made for the HVX200. Remember that Panasonic does not use the HDV codec at all, and the DVCPro codecs are some of the best ones out there.
If you’re shooting HDV the Canon’s version will be better than Sony’s because of the 9 frame GOP as opposed to the 15 frame GOP of the Sony’s.

Yep. you’ll need an HD deck (Read: not cheap) I don’t think Focus Enhancements makes a device that’s fast enough to capture uncompressed HD. I think the highest rate HD codec you can use with their Firestore drives is DVCPro HD, and it’s still firewire. Also remember that on the H1 you can’t capture the audio through the HD SDI port. You’ll need a separate device to capture the audio, or again, use an HD deck to capture both at the same time.

Thanks for the response, Shane. Your answer has put my concerns about the HVX200 and the DVCPro codecs to rest. FWIW a friend of mine is the 1st A.D. with the Masters of Horror series and they apparently cut HVX200 footage into their other Panny HD footage all the time. Not sure if the other footage is varicam or HDX900. His comment was that after final output the HVX footage is virtually “indistinguishable” from the other footage. High praise I would think.

Do you have DVD Studio Pro? With this program you can create a looping DVD with no menus.

You need to mux (multiplex or combine) your audio and video tracks into one file and that doesn’t usually happen until you create a DVD with a program like DVD Studio Pro. I would suggest you Google the free program “MPEG Streamclip” and it may allow you to mux your audio/video files into one. MPEG Streamclip is used mainly to demux MPEG2 files for editing purposes, but you may be able to use it to mux tracks as well. Not sure if the program does this but since it’s free it’s worth a look.

Go to Finder>Preferences>Advanced. Make sure the “show all file extentions” box is checked.

Others have experienced serious problems trying to edit using Final Cut Pro video files that were originally captured using Quicktime Pro. I can only assume that Final Cut Express would be a similar situation.

Since I use Final Cut Pro and not iMovie I can only tell you how I get audio from the XL2 in that way, but perhaps there’s a setting within iMovie that will accomplish the same thing. First of all you probably have to capture your video and the first 2 channels of audio at the same time. Then you need to make a second pass and capture the second 2 audio channels without capturing the video a second time. This is something you’ll have to find in the iMovie preferences somewhere. In FCP you have to do it this way and I’m assuming that iMovie won’t be any different.

It’s something to consider. I’ve never edited HDV but I do know that this codec uses a 15 frame GOP (9 frame GOP for Canon footage). Is the still that gets exported about 15 frames away from the one you selected? You might have to conform the footage first before you’re able to capture the exact frame you’re after. This is just a guess.

You won’t have to re-capture your video as long as your sequence settings match the type of DV you have e.g. if you have DV PAL video clips then make sure your sequence setting is also DV PAL.
