Rumor mill has the 32’s coming out sometime this fall. I just paid a grand (with tax) for another 16gig card yesterday. You can bet that when the 32’s come out the price of the 16’s will drop drastically. Cost of doing business I guess. The 32’s are projected to be around $1695.00 USD. Let’s hope the rumor mill is wrong on that one and it ends up being less.

I have the same situation too, but then the aspect ratios are the same for both formats anyway. I’ve always been able to import, edit and output a progressive sequence using the 1080i aspect ratio that FCP insists we use. There are no detrimental effects by doing it this way, at least not in my experience. Just to be sure though, check your sequence settings and make sure the field order is set to “none”. It probably already is, though.

This problem with Disc Utility stopping during the repair permissions task first came up almost a year ago. Turns out that an iTunes update was causing it. The fix was to turn off the Mini Store within iTunes and that allowed the repair permissions task to be completed. It may be worth a shot before resorting to a startup drive wipe.
Jerry Hofmann has mentioned that some companies using FCP suites do a startup drive wipe at least once a year and sometimes as frequently as every 6 months as preventive maintenance. Granted, these facilities are probably running 24/7, which would be like 2 years for a small post house like mine.

Something’s not right. I’ve been editing 1080p 30 from the EX for a while now and I’ve never had that prompt come up in FCP. This is just a reminder but you probably know this already: Make sure your sequence settings are for XDCAM EX 1080p 24 and not regular XDCAM HD 1080p 24 because these are two separate codecs available with FCP.
Try choosing Easy Setup again for with a new project and see if that solves it.

Just to clarify, I’ve never tried to drop a 720p clip into a 1080i sequence because I don’t shoot interlaced at all. Perhaps that’s why you’re dropping frames because you have a combination of interlaced and progresive in the same timeline. I don’t know how well FCP would deal with that as it tries to play that back unrendered but in real time.
If your 720 footage is restricted to progressive anyway, I’m curious as to why you don’t shoot your regular speed fooatge in progressive as well to retain compatability between formats.

You can mix the two different formats in the timeline and there’s no reduction in performance that I’ve noticed, basically because they both use the same EX codec. Depending on what your sequence settings are, dropping the other format into it will automatically be resized by FCP.
Remember too, that a lot of people are editing EX footage with both 1080 and 720 in the same sequence if they have overcrank (60fps) footage, which can only be done in 720 mode.

You have to have the on-screen access for adjusting parameters set to “Partial” instead of “Full” access. Then you’ll be able to change your W/B using the switch.

I’ve seen F900 footage intercut with EX1 footage and they go together quite well. As far as XDCAM HD footage for broadcast I know that the Discovery program “Mythbusters” has been shot with XDCAM HD for a while now but the footage is NOT EX1 footage.

If it was me I’d probably shoot clean (no filters) and do the color grading in post. Sure, you can warm up the look with in-camera tweaking and/or filters in front of the lens but you need to be using a broadcast monitor during your setup to make absolutely sure the changes are actually going to get you the look you’re after. Normally the only hard filters I ever use are grad NDs or polarizers (for rejecting reflections in glass or water).
Interestingly enough, I find the unaltered EX picture to be quite neutral rather than being too bluish or reddish. For me that’s a good thing because it takes a lot less work in post to achieve what your final look will be.
