1080p footage displayed as 1080i
I’ve imported some 1080p footage to FC but when I try to drop the footage into my timeline it asked me if I’d like to change the sequence settings to conform to clip, despite the fact I had set the sequence settings for 1080p. Everything is plying fine but why doesn’t final cut want me to edit the sequence in 1080p? Is it because my monitor is not 1080p?

Look at your clip settings. What do they say? 1080i? or 1080p?

My clip is an XDCAM EX 1080p24. It shows up that way in thew compressor window of the browser and also in the FORMAT of the Item Properties. Yet it automatically asked me to change my sequence setting to 1080i.

Something’s not right. I’ve been editing 1080p 30 from the EX for a while now and I’ve never had that prompt come up in FCP. This is just a reminder but you probably know this already: Make sure your sequence settings are for XDCAM EX 1080p 24 and not regular XDCAM HD 1080p 24 because these are two separate codecs available with FCP.
Try choosing Easy Setup again for with a new project and see if that solves it.

Perhaps I need to rephrase the question. When I click on “sequence settings” it correctly informs me that my editing timebase is 23.98 and correctly states my QT video settings to be: XDCAM 1080P24 (35VBR). My FRAME SIZE is 1920 x 1080 (good) BUT my ASPECT RATIO is HDTV 1080i (16:9) – bad(?) Why 1080i? There is no progressive option when I click on my aspect ration options. Actually there is but it’s 720P. But why am I not given a 1080p option for my aspect ratio??

I have the same situation too, but then the aspect ratios are the same for both formats anyway. I’ve always been able to import, edit and output a progressive sequence using the 1080i aspect ratio that FCP insists we use. There are no detrimental effects by doing it this way, at least not in my experience. Just to be sure though, check your sequence settings and make sure the field order is set to “none”. It probably already is, though.
