I’m starting to believe that this is the case. When doing capture tests with small clips it didn’t seem to matter if I set the capture preset to use interlaced or progressive, the clips were all saying ‘interlaced’ in the clip properties.

Thanks Mark. Your suggestion did the trick. I should’ve known that I could change the clip’s field order to “none” in the browser. It’s been a long day.

Doug Jensen is the owner of Vortex Media and the main man behind the training DVD Series entitled: Mastering the Sony PMW EX1 (highly recommended, BTW). Doug has also been in the broadcast business for 25 years as a freelance cameraman and editor. He states that at least 90% of the time he uses the HQ 1080 30p setting on his EX1. If Doug uses progressive shooting modes for broadcast delivery then it’s good enough for me.
There is no format setting that is the “be all and end all” for everyone. Different types of projects (talking heads, fast actions sports etc. should be your guide as to the recording format you use. As far as deciding between interlaced or progressive shooting, it all boils down to what looks good to you (as Mr. Jensen states in his EX training DVD). If you choose progressive then 30p will look a little smoother then 24p, simply because there are more frames per second being shot. Regardless of what recording format you choose, whenever possible always shoot at the highest quality setting for the best picture.

Just a bit of a heads-up for those who want to empty their SxS Pro cards by dragging the BPAV folder to the trash when using a computer: the camera may state that the card now needs to be “restored” before use. Just choose “Execute” and all will be fine. This can be done while the camera is still recording to the other card and will take less time than reformatting in-camera.

I believe the files with the .smi extension are files that contain relevant info about each of the companion video clips.
Anyway, follow the link below on the workflow required to solve your problem on how to stitch your incomplete clips back together when you have simply dragged the media from your cards on to a hard drive:

Provided the down-convert is done properly it looks better than SD. That’s been my experience.
