March 16, 2006 at 2:48 pm in reply to: Which Pioneer Burner?

the 100 & 610 are the same burner. they just come with different software… the 49 – 250 price difference is internal vs external & list price vs sale prices & different software …

you just plug em in and they work .. well maybe not with all software.
i have a pioneer 610 and it will NOT work with DVDa3 burning dual layer + disc and single layer + disc.. i have used nero7 to burn dual layer disc on it …

March 15, 2006 at 4:27 pm in reply to: HVX200 Greenscreeen experience?

IMO do your own greenscreen test .. Hvx greenscreen maybe good on some types of projects BUT for some the hor/vert pixel shift could cause some problems with certain type projects & keying software .. to make sure it works for YOU – test it

    just to be clear
you are shooting 35mm. it will be transferred to NTSC DVcam? , digibeta ? HD ?

you are also shooting HVX and will intercut them – anywhere ? just certain scenes ( pre planned) or is the HVX B camera ?

    March 5, 2006 at 5:44 pm in reply to: 1394b/firewire 800 or USB RAID-external

i’m not so sure that RAID over 1394B offers you anymore then if you ran them as individual drives over 1394b because XP SP2 pretty much put 1394b ( firewire 800) back to 100 speed ( 1394a= 400).. yes microsoft came up with a fix to put it give it 400 speeds and there are a few 3rd party drivers BUT they have never reached XP SP1 speeds.

A new 250-500 gig drive can reach approx 55-65 Mgs read/writes .. now a 1394a/b raid on paper should be faster ( and they are on a MAC) BUT it’s the 1394 that will slow it down on a PC( again because XP SP2) .. 1394B RAID on XP SP1 will reach 800 speeds. BUT not all software will run on SP1

as far as speed goes on my 4 bay & 2 bay 1394B cases when i set them up as RAID they are NO faster then if i run them as individual drives over XP SP2 .. look at 1394b RAID for total storage in ONE case ..IMO if you’re looking for SPEED ( & total storage) then IMO look at SATA RAID..

March 1, 2006 at 4:12 pm in reply to: Decklink for Dummies

” I have my eye on the new Panasonic, (as we all do) ”

1st please exclude me from that “as we all do” ..

2nd the decklink for DV and the panasonic HVX does almost nothing for you!! save your $$$ … unless you want to capture SD & HD thru the decklink and end up with HUGE files ( raid needed on HD) = net result from tape/P2 = just a bigger file – those same files can be capture over 1394 …

decklink does make a box for previewing only and that may help on previewing HD out to a 1920×1080 monitor …

February 23, 2006 at 5:45 am in reply to: Render to AVI good versus best

    from sony Vegas:

The simple explanation is to use “Good” most of the time. This is the default setting. If you want more info, read on…

    Quality: Best
    Scaling: bi-cubic/integration
    Field Handling: on
    Field Rendering: on (setting dependent)
    Framerate Resample/IFR: on (switch dependent)

    Quality: Good
    Scaling: bi-linear
    Field Handling: on
    Field Rendering: on (setting dependent)
    Framerate Resample/IFR: on (switch dependent)

    Quality: Preview
    Scaling: bi-linear
    Field Handling: off
    Field Rendering: off
    Framerate Resample/IFR: always off

    Quality: Draft
    Scaling: point sample
    Field Handling: off
    Field Rendering: off
    Framerate Resample/IFR: always off

    ——————————
    Scaling:
    ——————————

These methods come into play when conforming sources that differ from the output size. They are also used when panned, cropped or resized in track motion.

Bi-Cubic/Integration – Best image resizing algorithm available in Vegas. Quality differences will be most noticeable when using very large stills or stretching small sources.

Bi-linear – Best compromise between speed and quality. This method will produce good results in most cases.

Point Sampling – Fast but produces poor results.

    ——————————
    Field Handling:
    ——————————

This refers to the field conformance stage of Vegas’s video engine. This includes Interlaced to Progressive conversion, Interlaced to interlaced output when scaling, motion or geometric Video FX and Transitions are involved. Skipping this stage can sometimes result in bad artifacts when high motion interlaced sources are used.

    ———————————
    Field Rendering:
    ———————————

When the output format is interlaced, Vegas will internally render at the field rate (twice the frame rate) to achieve smooth motion and FX interpolation.

    ———————————
Frame Rate Resample / IFR (Interlace Flicker Reduction):
    ———————————

    Frame Rate Resample:

This kicks in when speed changes are made through Velocity Envelopes and/or event stretching. In can also be used when up-converting low frame rate sources. This only kicks in if the resample switch is turned on _and_ quality is set to good or best.

    Interlace Flicker Reduction:

This kicks in if the event switch is turned on and quality is set to good or best. See Vegas’ documentation for a description of this switch.

    ———————————

Lastly, please note that Vegas will bypass any or all of these potentially expensive processing stages if the resulting output won’t be affected by the process (e.g. no-recompress pass-through, field render bypass when settings don’t change and so on …). Differences in the output between different quality settings may not always be noticeable, but that largely depends on various attributes of the source media being used. If you want to see some of these differences first hand, trying using extremely large or small sources or high-motion interlaced shots with extreme pan/crop operations.

Please note that you should never render your final project using anything other than good or best when interlaced sources are involved unless the project only contains cuts. If preview quality is used, the resulting video will vary between acceptable to disastrous depending on your project and its media content

February 22, 2006 at 4:49 pm in reply to: Problems with Video Quality

is there scaling in both chapters? or more scaling in chap 2 ?

DVDa 1 will copy the mpegs files and change the mpg extension to .VOB when it prepares the project – that should only take approx 4-6 min for a 1.8gig file .. if it is taking 15-30 min then it is re-rendering the mpeg …

February 21, 2006 at 4:53 pm in reply to: Problems with Video Quality

“some horizontal waves or jittering throughout ”

what is the size of the rendered mpeg file ?
    i believe DVDA 1 has a max size of ?? 3.7gigs ??
if it is larger then 3.7 then DVDa1 might be re-rendering the mpeg ?
40 min project should just make it using default settings.

if rendered mpeg is under 3.7gig then
in Vegas make sure you are using the DVDa NTSC stream template .. then click on custom – video .. make sure the average bit stream is at least 6,000,000 , change the min to 4,200,000 from 192,000 …
be sure to check the size of the finished clip –
if larger then DVDa1 3.7gig size then you will have to make it smaller .. 40min project try 5,200,000 average , max 7,000,000, min 3,800,000 ..

you can leave rendering quality to GOOD … best if you did any scaling of video or panning across any video clips, or changed play back speeds …

February 21, 2006 at 4:37 pm in reply to: OT: NAB, Vegas in April or DV Expo in LA, Nov

NAB is HUGE and probably 80% of the booths you’ll have no interest !
takes a full day just to walk thru all of it and again most of it you’re just walking by unless you have interest in TV feeds , satillite feeds/lines, cable feeds etc lots of TV broadcasting related items as the name is NAB .. take a look at the manufacturers list to make sure the ones you want to see will be there …

DV expo will have more personal/hands on attention … you can do a 1 hr walk thru …
