i did see a 80% working hand made HVX200 at resfest …however i did not see anybody using it .. i was able to pick it up for a few seconds but basically it sat there playing back clips on a 17″ LCD monitor … 1080i was the only mode that was working ( no 24/30p) .. after one sits thru panasonics talk on the defects of interlace and how much better progressive is over interlace they then project interlace images on the BIG screen .. note: Jan gives a excellent presentation on P2 and the HVX200 – i would have preferred to look at progressive images …
also at RESFEST canon had their new HD camera .. it was working and you could take it in your hands and walk anywhere in the room with it

i capture to a USB hard drive with my laptop ..
from my laptop experience – when capturing to external drive i make sure the C drive does NOT turn off/sleep = from my experience HP and averatec laptops when C drive shuts down/sleep it will drop few frames on external drive ?? and it may drop a few frames when C drive awakes -got me why ??? this doesn’t happen on desktop computer …
also i find better writes speeds when write cache is turned ON ( external)

1) the spec’s for DV ntsc is non square pixels = you should NOT have a choice … if you render as uncompressed qt then that might be square pixels ??
…2)FCP should be able to give you a good render ..go to FCP forum and ask for the render settings … if the edit is complex (lot of video tracks , audio, transitions) there is no way you would be able to export a EDL or AAF file that Vegas would assemble …
on some project i do render out a uncompressed MASTER render – then from that i create mpegs, wmv,QT,ntsc dv etc … if you want to make the mpegs, ntsc DV etc from vegas then you would render out FCP as QT uncompressed = approx 30mgs (vs dv at 5mgs) ..then bring that uncompressed clips into vegas and create the DVD’s etc ..but you may have a problem bringing the files into a PC . a PC is not going to read a mac hard drive..when i’ve networked with a MAC -everything for transferring files were done from the Mac …IMO because the edit is FCP =create all clips from FCP …

you bring up a excellent point “workflow ” !!!!
i never thought about that before as it’s never been my problem ..
the panasonic is a different workflow that at the moment NOBODY has answers ?? what do you hand the client at the end of the day ?
especially if it’s long documentary type where you interviews several persons for 30-1 hrs each = 5-6 hrs at end of day = you don’t have tiem to sit down and delete sections … so i would say choosing the panasonic one had better think about workflow !!! with HDV you just hand client the tape and there is no need to think about workflow …so is panasonic making the cinematographer have to come up with the post workflow for the producer ?? forget it .. if you shoot film you hand producer the film stock at end of day = they know the workflow … you shoot tape again you hand producer the tape = they know the workflow … so what do i do with P2 cards at end of day = transfer to hard drive ? DVD ? DLT tape = since when is workflow the cinematograhers problem ??

if the VOB is encryted protected ( as in they don’t want you to copy) = vegas will NOT play the clip ..

it doesn’t say what camera’s … but you already know it is in the same group of camera’s but seems you WISH that it’s in a class of it’s own…
why should it not be clumped in with sony, canon, jvc HDV camera’s ?
bottom line the camera may not record HDV mpeg but it is in the same group of camera when talked about here and on other forums … and if you go to see the new panasonic at resfest panasonic compares DVCpro HD1080i/720p to HDV .. and you will want to see how the HVX clips compare to HDV clips on the screen and not compared to Varicam clips ( which panasonic does not show you at resfest) = panasonic considers it grouped with HDV camera by sony, jvc, canon …

i believe panasonic started with recording to DISC but ran into problems and then went P2 .. if you go to panasonic’s lecture on P2 at resfest you’ll see that they tip their hat to sony for working out the DISC problems …
XDCAM is here and it offers some solutions to the high cost of p2 cards and some of the archieving questions that many are asking about P2 … time will tell if there is room for both systems and to where ( hi $$ production, med, low production) each fits in … -
just to be clear .. panasonic hasn’t released any info if the camera shoots 1920×1080 = we only know it does have a 1080i mode but that could be 960×1080, 1440×1080 ..from hearing panasonic talk about the camera i doubt if it has native 1920×1080 …
the JVC HDV i believe is 720p which the other poster says has a 25mbs data rate … i believe the HVX200 when shot in 720p(24p) has a 40mbs data rate .. and it does have 4:2:2 color space vs. HDV 4:2:0 … so theoretically it should have a better image thenHDV BUT the bottom line is what is on the screen and from judging past tape to film transfers somnetimes it comes down to one house being better then the other = the lessor camera with a excellent DP could look better then the better camera with a so-so DP …

i was at resfest yesterday and panasonic had a HVX200 camera there that was “80%” finished.. they showed a clip from it on the big screen ( recorded 1080i) .. IMO the clip was useless recorded by one of their sales persons ?? 10 min of huh – why are you showing me this ? the clips they were showing on a 17″ monitor in the lobby were better then the clip they showed on GIANT screen .. panasonioc still refuses to state the CCD pixels .. bottom line is the camera is NOT ready and they are not ready to fully speak about it …
however CANON was at the show and they had working model of their new HD camera that you could put in your hands and roam around the room …
based on what is available TODAY .. IMO the best bang for your $$ would be the dvx100 or XL2 used in 24p mode and the sony HDV camera for a transfer to film.. note that many tape to transfer houses are recommending the new sony HDV camera shot 1080i then transferred to FILM as the BEST from a hand size camera ( yes even over dvx100 24p ) bottom line is it has MORE resolution then any of the SD hand size camera’s ….
