I am using a dell Inspiron 9200 laptop with 2 usb and 1 firewire ports. (not enough hard drive space available for my project)

I would like to buy a seagate external hard drive 400 GB. It has 1 usb and 1 fire wire port.

My camcorder uses a firewire to transmit the video.

My question is will the performance or transfere rate be affected by having to use an USB port going back to my external hard drive from my laptop? Thanks for any suggestions. John

i capture to a USB hard drive with my laptop ..

from my laptop experience – when capturing to external drive i make sure the C drive does NOT turn off/sleep = from my experience HP and averatec laptops when C drive shuts down/sleep it will drop few frames on external drive ?? and it may drop a few frames when C drive awakes -got me why ??? this doesn’t happen on desktop computer …

also i find better writes speeds when write cache is turned ON ( external)
