True HD monitoring is expensive regardless of what brand of camera you are using. Well, you may consider the Tamuz line of portable HD-SDI monitor. I saw one earlier this year, it was approximately 7-8″ wide and it had multiple HD-SDI inputs on the back. It performed quite well with the XL H1. Can’t remember which model it was, but price was aropund $3,500. I really wanted to take it home with me.

Exactly.
I would record to the GL1 versus the mini disc.

Not really. Well, yes and no. But not really…
That lens you have was designed to resolve an image circle large enough to completely fill a 2/3″ CCD. If you place that lens in front of the XL2, the smaller 1/3″ CCD’s of the XL2 would only “see” the center of the image circle of that lens – end result would be a much narrowr field of view (a much more telephoto focal range) which you would probably consider “too telephoto” to be useable. It’s not to say that people do not use that conversion factor to their advantage – some do. A lot of nature cinematographers need extreme telephoto focal ranges, for instance.

Don’t use Free Run unless you will not be pausing during recording – and that is very rare.
If you need to identify time of day, then set time of day with the User Bits on the XL2.
By using Rec Run, you will reduce the incidence of time code breaks – or changes in timcode if you pause a lot during recording.

Something tells me that you may have slightly better mic preamps and audio leveling, in addition to more frequency range, on the GL1 than on the handheld mini disc recorder. It could be said that the difference between the two is negligible?
The benefit of using the mini disc recorder is that you will have quicker random access to your sound bites (less time spent searching for gems)

As far as I know, the XL2 is NOT being discontinued.
I have an XL2. I use the included 20X XL servo lens often. It is that good. Especially for continous handheld work where you can barely control what is going on in the frame – the auto focus, auto iris and Image Stabilization are going to work for you in helping you to direct your attention to the composition during those chaotic moments.
I also have the Canon 16X Manual Servo lens which I tend to use for more commercial work when we have time to set up the frame or when I have a need for deep macro effects (product shots, etc). Both lenses are quite good. Start with the 20x. Both lenses share a 72mm front screw-on thread mount.
Feel free to ask more questions about this.

August 10, 2006 at 5:15 am in reply to: Canon XL-H1 – does it output embedded audio from HD-SDI BNC ?I prefer the Convergent design HD-Connect LE box. I have one and it is very robust and works like a charm.
Gives any HDV camcorder an SDI output with embedded audio. Gives you RS-422 deck control too with embedded timecode too. Just like my AJA Kona 2 card likes it.
I’m using this box all the time for one thing or another…
Can also use it to cross convert HDV 1080i footage to HD-SDI 720 60P – I have done this and it is cool.https://www.convergent-design.com/CD_Products_HDConnectLE.htm

The LCD on the GL2 does not offer “WYSWIG” 16:9 or Letterbox 16:9 in a 4:3 frame… it is stretched.
Use an external anamorphic 16:9 monitor.
