August 27, 2006 at 2:37 am in reply to: Help! Playback problems from XL-H1 / User error?Unplug the firewire cable from the XL H1 firewire port, then the HD DOWN CONV option should be available. The blue HDV light next to the XL H1 firewire port will turn off, signifying that the camera is now outputting Standard Definition DV over firewire.
You have to disconnect the firewire cable from the XL H1 firewire port each time you want to switch on or off the HD DOEN CONV option.
Please write back to let me know if this did the trick.

Uggggghhhhhh… sorry,,, MY mistake… My last posting is a prime example of why you should not try to give out technical advice while you are holed up in a Las Vegas hotel room at 4am in the morning… my suggestion that you should try switching the “Standby/Lock” switch into “Lock” to lock the functions of the current state of the camera is erroneous – if you switch to “Lock” the camera goes to black… sooooooooooo, just please kindly disregard that suggestion! I’ll be back home from the WEVA expo in Las Vegas tomorrow…
It does sound to me like your GL2 needs servicing though!
Thank you for your understanding,

>>>>>>Is it normal (with Canon’s, at least) for the last 10 minutes or so of a 60 minute MiniDV tape to be unusable due to dropouts?
— Nope!
>>>>>>I stripe all my tapes, usually with my GL-1, then use a freestanding rewinder to save wear on the camera motor. Might I be contributing to the problem by not rewinding in the camera?
— You don’t need to stripe your tapes. I never do. That would eliminate using the external rewinder.
>>>>>>I DID use a batch of Sony tapes for a shoot a while back, possibly since the cameras’ last service/cleaning cycle. I had always used Panasonic before that, and have used nothing but Panasonic since, but could those 3-4 Sony tapes (per camera) have clogged up the heads so badly that a cleaning cassette can’t clear the problem?
— Possibly. Slight chance that some of the Sony tape residue conflicted with the Panasonic tape oxide. But if that were the problem, your dropouts would occur throughout your tape and not simply during the last 10 minutes of your tape.
1. Stop striping your tapes
2. Stop using that external rewinder
3. Use one brand of tape. If you must suddenly use a different brand of tape, run a dry head cleaning tape for 6-10 seconds and clean the heads of any potential left over tape oxide residue BEFORE switching to the new brand of tape
4. Do a confidence check of the recorded tape while recording (during a break) to make sure you have a clean recording. If you still see dropouts, run that head cleaning tape for another 6-10 seconds and try again. If problem still persists, call Canon Technical Service and schedule a repair.

Hello Skip,
How are you?
>>>>>>As you can imagine, a single ballerina in a pink and white tutu on a large stage with a black curtain behind, shows up on a wide shot like an animated light bulb.
Use SPOTLIGHT MODE. This exposure mode is designed exactly for those type of shooting situations where much of the frame is dark and your subject is intensely lit.
I often use Spotlight Mode for shooting dance performances with my XL2 or XL H1.
Please do let us know if you have any other questions,

The firewire output of the GL2 is a 29.97 NTSC DV stream regardless if you shot in normal Movie Mode or Frame Mode.
Simply edit it as 29.97.

Just underneath the Rec button, there is a small “Standby/ Lock” switch – once you start recording, try setting that switch to “Lock” to lock the functions of the camera in that current state – maybe this might act as a temporary fix to allow you to get some recording use out of the camera.
Otherwise, your camera needs to be sent in to Canon Service. I hope that your GL2 is still within the 1-year warranty period! >>>>>>I need a camera like the Panasonic AG DVC30 that can display the timecode (date and time) without an annoying CARC Recognition blinking like on the XL1S and the like.
— OK, I’m gonna take the bullet on this one and ask the inevitable question which I think many who read your question are wondering: “what do you mean by *CARC Recognition*???”
>>>>>>I need to capture strait to a laptop (Fire-wire) to capture Mpeg1 (yes so I will need PC) and can’t use a timecode generator for it has an RCA input to the computer and Bridges don’t seem to be stable enough.
— Huh? Are you saying that you own a timecode generator BUT it only has RCA outs -or_ are you saying something else here???? Please clarify… ALSO, you state “Bridges don’t seem to be stable enough”… are you referring to the various bi-directional DV bridges (media converters) available from companies such as DataVideo, Canopus, etc? Again, please clarify…
If you are trying to ingest live DV from your camcorder via firewire into your PC and capture as MPEG1 – that’s easy enough to do – as long as you have the NLE software and a decent drive (I’d recommend a 7200rpm – no slower than 5400rpm) with enough free space to allow you to record for the duration you need.
Please clarify what your issue is so that one of us can offer a solution.

That No-name 2.5x telephoto adaptor will physically fit onto the GL2 – but I highly doubt that such a cheap piece of glass will perform favorably, free of chromatic aberrations and soft edges. Expect to see measurable chromatic distortion in that lens adaptor. The seller does not mention who the manufacturer is – that’s a “red flag” right there. The adaptor is labelled as “High Definition”. I doubt that.
I don’t mean to sound jaded or negative but I have yet to see any of these cheap adaptors perform well enough to earn their keep.
A high quality lens adaptor costs requires exceptional glass and to prodcue a high quality lens adaptor with exceptional glass requires certain manufacturing procedures and labor and all of that costs money. No way around that. Good glass design comes at a price.
I’d prefer to use the Century Optics 2X adaptor

It is $525 and well worth it because it does the job without degrading the image quality.I’m not saying that no-name 2.5x tele adaptor will not suit your needs – you’ll probably get the tighter compositions you are seeking and you may find a way to live with the chromatic aberrations and distortion. It’s cheap enough that if it fails to fit the bill, it didn’t cost you that much to try it out… just don’t have a lot of high expectations and you may be satisfied.
Best of luck,

August 14, 2006 at 2:55 pm in reply to: Please welcome Mike ‘Xeeb’ Morris to the Canon forum and Creative Cow team>>>>However would it be possible to save the settings for one camera, and upload the setup to multiple cameras.
– Yes. You can save and recall to/from either SD card or an external hard drive.>>>>Is the application licensed for one camera only.
– Good question. I will confirm whether or not you can use one liscense of Console with multiple cameras with different serial #’s. Will get back to you on this one.>>>>Also is it usable on PC and Mac.
– Windows XP only. We have run Console very successfully on a Mac using Boot Camp and running Windows XP under Mac OS X. Of course, you need one of the new Wintel Macs to do this.– don
