  • >>>>>>>Coring at +9? That’s like applying the skin detail feature to the whole frame. This alone will make things look like plastic… especially skin tones

    — You are incorrect. The Coring circuit in the XH camcorder will remove a subtle amount of noise from full-field colors without adversely affecting fine picture detail.

    >>>>>>>And NR2 on high? I think just with these 2 combinations alone aren’t going to make anything “better” than what it could be. And wait until this is encoded for DVD. I doubt there are many if any compressors out there that for the most part would make certain scenes with these settings look even more like mud

    — Noise Reduction 2 (NR2) does indeed work at removing noise from the entire image – useful when you are maxing out the camera with higher video gain levels under low lighting conditions. Be aware that you should only use it when you need to remove noise… as it does slightly dull down the image detail when NR2 is set to a higher level… Do you need to remove grain/ noise or maintain the highest level of detail? You may not have both at the same time… Basically, it’s your call whether it works for you.

William, my suggestions were based on actual user experience. I’d agree that a software compressor could possibly have the effect of decreasing the detail in the image which has already been slightly dulled down by noise reduction,,, but it is not as bad as you make it out to be.

Again, my suggestion is to try it and see if it works in your application/ situation.

Thanks for your comments, they are sincerely appreciated.

    Take care,

You cannot use the XL H1 to play back JVC HD-110u footage or vice-versa. You’ll need the actual camcorder which the footage was captured on to play the footage back and capture from.

  • Create a CUSTOM PRESET using the CUSTOMIZE menu and inside the Custom Preset, set BLACKS to STRETCH, CORING to +9, NOISE REDUCTION 1 to “0ff” and NOISE REDUCTION 2 to “High”. Activate the particular Custom preset which you just created with the Custom Preset On/Off and Select buttons on the exterior of the camera. Also, set AGC to OFF and use +6 Gain (possibly +12). Try using AV MODE and set the IRIS wide open. If it’s Dance on a stage, try using SPOTLIGHT MODE.

    Hope this info helps,

Using an HV20 or the newer HV30 as a deck to play back and capture your XH or XL H1 camcorder tapes from works just fine. It’s not a deck, but again you will not have any problems using this solution. Many people use it. I use it. It works. At the end of the day, there is no difference in quality. The HV camcorder offers you HDV over FireWire, in addition to Component out or HDMI out.

June 30, 2008 at 11:14 am in reply to: Canon XH-A1 Unable to work with FCP 6.0

You could also try closing FCP, then trashing your FCP pref files, then rebooting, then restarting FCP with camera connected in VCR Mode. Then, choose an EASY SETUP of HDV 1080i 60 and finally in AUDIO VIDEO SETTINGS set DEVICE CONTROL from to HDV FIREWIRE BASIC.

How To Trash Your FCP Prefs:
    1. Quit FCP.
    2. Open your System Drive.
    3. Set to Column View.
    4. Follow the path: Users > Name > Library > Preferences.
    5. In the Preferences Pane look for “com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist”. Drag the FCP plist to the Trash.
    6. In the same Preference Pane, look for the Final Cut Pro User Data Folder.
    7. From inside the Data Folder, drag ‘Final Cut Pro (v) Prefs’, ‘Final Cut Pro Obj Cache’ and ‘Final Cut Pro Prof Cache’ to the Trash.
    8. Do NOT empty the Trash just yet.
    9. Launch FCP and check all your settings. All FCP setting will have reverted to default. Don’t forget to reset your Scratch Disk settings.
    10. Once FCP is up and running correctly, then you can empty the Trash.

Let us know how things work out for you.

  • You’ll have to use an XLR “Y” CABLE to feed both inputs of the MA-300. If you set your levels correctly, the lav should more or less sound the same regardless if plugged into the mini-plug input or into the MA-300.

  • You need two (2) HDV decks or camcorders compatible with the HDV 1080i (60i) format. Using a standard definition DV deck will not help you produce an HDV clone.

Sounds like it is a tape transport mechanism problem and that you most likely will have to have it serviced.
