September 10, 2006 at 1:23 am in reply to: Capturing XLH1 with Firewire.

FCP v5.1 does not yet natively support the XL H1 in 24F Mode…

This is all changing rapidly because just this week during the IBC Expo in Amsterdam, Apple annouced that FCP version 5.1.2 is coming soon with native 24F support. FCP v5.1.2 will fully support capture and device control (with TimeCode), 24F editing and 24F output over firewire to the XL H1 (in addition to the current native support of 60i Mode).

Release date will most likely be October. This will most likely be a free update – only available to FCP5.1 owners. If v5.1 is installed on your Mac, you’ll simply run the software update app from the Apple menu to automatically update FCP 5.1 (or 5.1.1) to 5.1.2. This, of course, when the update is officially released – sometime shortly – in October.

Expect to see more news made available shortly from Canon and Apple.

    1. Turn OFF your web browser Pop-up blocker
    2. Go to URL:
    https://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=326&modelid=10350
    3. The above URL is the XL2 Download Library page. At the very top of this page, in RED TEXT is the following text: “Product/ Software Manuals” – Click on this text – a new browser window will pop up which will contain the link to the English version of the XL2 User Manual (.pdf version) at the bottom of the page (“XL202IM-EN.pdf”).
    4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on “XL202IM-EN.pdf”

Please let me know if you have ANY difficulty in downloading this manual.

  • Have you tried rebooting the camera after every 3 DVD’s?

  • Sounds like you have timecode breaks on your tapes. And, it’s the responsibility of the shooter to minimize and prevent timecode breaks on tape during acquisition.

HERE’s HOW TO PREVENT TIMECODE BREAKS:
When you are shooting with your XL1S – make sure that you always record a few extra seconds after each shot. Then, regardless of how much time elapses before the next shot – when it is time to shoot the next shot, make sure you overlap a few frames of the previous shot by using the REC SEARCH + or – buttons to cue up the tape to a few frames into the last shot recorded on tape.

    TAKEN FROM THE XL1S MANUAL:
When the camera is in record pause mode, you can use record search to play the tape forwards or backwards to find the point where you want to start or restart recording.

    1. Make sure the camera is in record pause mode.
    2. Press and hold the REC SEARCH + or

Before you purchase a Canon XL H1, make sure you are dealing with an authorized Canon XL H1 reseller. Not all retailers are… Those retailers who advertise thousands of dollars under MAP (Minimum Advertised price) are not worth your time. They are at the very least NOT authorized by Canon and are not selling products with proper serial numbers eligible for warranty service in the US. That is why they probably will try to sell you an expensive 3-year warranty along with the camera.

Here is an official list of Canon XL H1 Dealers Authorized by Canon in the US – State by State:
    https://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=StandardDisplayAct&fcategoryid=102&keycode=Authorize_Dealers

If the dealer you had in mind is not included in the above list, they are not authorized by Canon.

I’d stay away from any non-authorized XL H1 dealer.

Depends upon how many tapes you will be shooting each day.

If you will be shooting tapes every day, get a backup camcorder or deck to play back the tapes into your edit system.

If you capture a few tapes every other week or so, don’t worry about it unless you have money to spare and you are looking for a tax write-off.

    You should be fine.

Clean the heads with a good dry head cleaning tape before the gig.

You can at least rent a Sony HDV studio deck and then set the DECVICE CONTROL in FCP to “SONY HDV FIREWIRE”.

Very shortly, Apple will announce “FULL *native support & compatibility* with Canon XL H1” (including Device Control)… am very much looking forward to that.

Let’s hope that you used “REC RUN” for your timecode and not “free run”… I don’t advise using free run unless you are capturing with a deck locked via RS-422 control (AJA Kona or Blackmagic Design interface).

What frame rate Mode did you shoot in (60i, 30F or 24F) ?
What version of Final Cut Pro are you using?

Exactly what are you trying to do? It sounds like you want to go back and re-capture all of your on-line footage (from your edit timeline) as HDV instead of DV. Are you attempting to do a Batch Capture of all of the clips in your edit timeline as HDV? Please clarify.

How many tapes did you originally ingest as standard def DV? Did you ingest the entire tape?

You are probably going to have to *manually* re-link all the media on your timeline individually – clip by clip.
