    Hi everyone,

I would like to welcome Mike Morris to the Creative Cow team. Mike is also know as ‘Xeeb’ which is his name in the Hmong language, and is pronounced ‘Seng.’ Mike says that while he is not Hmong, he spent a lot of time among Hmong people while he lived in Wisconsin and they gave him the name.

We are delighted to have him here and on the Creative Cow team and you can learn more about him by clicking on his picture.

Thanks, Xeeb, for being a part of the Cow Team, we are pleased to have you here with us.

    Hi Xeeb –
have you ever used the Canon XL-H1 camera – ever use the Console software program ?
How long of a firewire cable can you run from the camera to the computer? How many cameras
can you control from one computer?

    Thanks –
    Bob Zelin

    Bob,

So far, I have not used the XL-H1 Camera nor the console software, so I am afraid I am not your best reference right now.

Anyone with more experience on the matter able to offer their advice?

    Sib Ntsib Dua

    Hello guys,

I have a Canon XL H1. Awesome camera.

Canon’s “Console” software is designed to control one XL H1, XL2 (or forthcoming XH G1 or XH A1). That means one camera per computer. To clarify, you cannot control more than one XL H1 from one computer via the Console application as it is currently designed.

Regarding maximum length of firewire cable between XL H1 and Console/ computer — I have successfully used a 30′ firewire cable. There ARE longer firewire cables available designed to provide “lossless” IEEE1394 data transmission available from various manufacturers – these cables are specially made, they are much thicker than standard firewire cables. Here’s one example: https://www.tecnec.com/SearchProduct.asp?item=DV%2DDV%2D75&off=43&sort=prod

Let us know if you have any other questions, ok?

    Looking forward,

    – don

    Thanks for the info.
I understand that you can only control one camera with the CCU Software, which makes sense now when you consider all the functionality of the software. However would it be possible to save the settings for one camera, and upload the setup to multiple cameras. The white paper description says that the data can be saved. If so, that would help match cameras even if you did not need to use the record function, and real time shading capabilities of the software. Is the application licensed for one camera only. Also is it usable on PC and Mac.

    >>>>However would it be possible to save the settings for one camera, and upload the setup to multiple cameras.
    – Yes. You can save and recall to/from either SD card or an external hard drive.

    >>>>Is the application licensed for one camera only.
    – Good question. I will confirm whether or not you can use one liscense of Console with multiple cameras with different serial #’s. Will get back to you on this one.

    >>>>Also is it usable on PC and Mac.
    – Windows XP only. We have run Console very successfully on a Mac using Boot Camp and running Windows XP under Mac OS X. Of course, you need one of the new Wintel Macs to do this.
