    Hello,

My advertising agency is looking to buy a Canon XL2. Is there a lens upgrade that anyone recommends? We need a professional-grade all-around lens, and we’re not sure the one that comes with the XL2 will be good enough.

Since Canon is discontinuing the XL2, prices on the body have dropped but the lenses are still priced normally since they fit the new HDV camera.
If you don’t like the newer 20x auto lens, then you might have a look at the 16x manual lens.
If you want a more professional grade lens, you will more than likely need to purchase a professional grade camera than the xl2.

As far as I know, the XL2 is NOT being discontinued.

I have an XL2. I use the included 20X XL servo lens often. It is that good. Especially for continous handheld work where you can barely control what is going on in the frame – the auto focus, auto iris and Image Stabilization are going to work for you in helping you to direct your attention to the composition during those chaotic moments.
I also have the Canon 16X Manual Servo lens which I tend to use for more commercial work when we have time to set up the frame or when I have a need for deep macro effects (product shots, etc).

Both lenses are quite good. Start with the 20x. Both lenses share a 72mm front screw-on thread mount.

Feel free to ask more questions about this.

My boss wants to know if an old analog lens called called the J14x8B (which we currently use for a Sony DXC-637 BetaCam)would work on the XL2. I seem to doubt it.

Not really. Well, yes and no. But not really…
That lens you have was designed to resolve an image circle large enough to completely fill a 2/3″ CCD. If you place that lens in front of the XL2, the smaller 1/3″ CCD’s of the XL2 would only “see” the center of the image circle of that lens – end result would be a much narrowr field of view (a much more telephoto focal range) which you would probably consider “too telephoto” to be useable.

It’s not to say that people do not use that conversion factor to their advantage – some do. A lot of nature cinematographers need extreme telephoto focal ranges, for instance.
