Actually, Avid does more than that. You can mix different format – DV25, DV50, uncompress 8 bit, 10 bit, HD, SD, etc. [some limitation on the SD/HD mixing]. Given it is all OMF or MXF [even that you can mix] it is still better than all DV or all uncompress. You can even render on different formats.

It would be nice if they can do this. Avid can do it with both Mojo and Adrenaline. Scopes, including 4 way view, can be output to the client monitor. It responsive and gives feedback during color correcting. Only downside is that it reverts to normal video when you hit the play button. Decklink can take this to another level by actually making it work during normal playback. It would basically eliminate hardware scopes for a lot of situations.

They are raw media files with MXF metadata.
It is not a Quicktime file. It is more analogous to *.DV files. Incidently, QT knows by default how to handle *.DV files. QT 7 might be able to handle DIFs.Theoretically it can be used by any application that can interpret MXF file structure AND has the codec [DV25/DV50/100] to decompress the file.
Avid handles MXF natively. You can drag and drop the file in to a bin, all media and metadata is sorted for you automatically.

Well not really. Adobe has shown that it can be done. After Effects runs great on both platform.
Apple would sell A LOT MORE FCP in the PC platform than it would on the Mac. iPod/iTunes anyone?. But unlike iPod, the revenue souce would be limited. No Mac hardware or service to go along with it.

Rule #1 of FCP OMF exports – don’t expect much.
Just be happy the media and its I/O are correct. Anything more than that is icing on the cake.

You are basically seeing the destructive powers of DV25 compression.
If you have Xpress Pro HD you can import it as DV50 which significantly improves picture quality. If you have Mojo, you can import it as uncompress which is further improvement compared to DV50, especially DV25. -

Are you sure about that? 16 RGB has a 280 billion+ possible colors. How many can 32 bit YCrCb can do?
